Nearly half Americans have housed homeless: study

Nearly half Americans have housed homeless: study

Thu Nov 15

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Nearly half of Americans have taken in a friend or relative who was facing homelessness, and around one-third said they have worried about losing their own home, a poll showed Thursday.

"Forty-four percent of the adult public report that at some time they had taken in a friend or relative who was facing homelessness," said the Gallup poll released by the Fannie Mae company, which promotes affordable housing.

"Close to three in 10 (28 percent) of the general public surveyed report that there has been a time when they, themselves, were worried that they may not have a place to live," the survey said.

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, the United States has around 750,000 homeless people, including nearly 200,000 combat veterans.

1. I wonder how they define that?
As someone down on their luck, or who simply has not found a place yet? There are all kinds of situations leading to taking in a friend or relative.

I took in a colleague who just moved to CA and was living in a motel. I said I got a room to rent, come live here. Would that count under the criteria of this study, I wonder?

2. Maybe we're not such people after all, on average

3. My wife and i have taken in friends and family more then once,
and we'll never turn away friends & family in need. It's just a shame we have to do it, all americans should have a place to live and plenty to eat always. And imho medical care.

Peace!

4. Hm, gosh, yes, my brother moved in with me when he was jobless for awhile.
I never thought of it as "housing the homeless" but I guess it's certainly possible.
