Costs in deer case: $40,000 -- so far State wildlife officials took the deer <Snowball and Bucky> from a family after an eight-hour police stand-off in September. Veterinary care for the two cost $1,286. Most of the rest of the expenses came from state workers fielding calls from angry Oregonians about the seizure.
Wildlife officials don't include personnel costs in the bill
SALEM -- Are Oregon taxpayers getting gouged . . . by deer?
On Tuesday, legislators called on state wildlife officials to disclose public spending on Snowball and Bucky, the two blacktail deer seized from a Molalla family Sept. 12. How much for the DNA test, vasectomy and antler-cutting for Bucky? How much for X-rays, birth-control injections and a hoof-trimming for Snowball? How much for the herd of attorneys wrangling with the deer's former keepers?
The buck stopped -- or at least paused -- as Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife officials announced the case has racked up $1,286 in veterinary costs and $38,620 in legal fees.
Letter from Switzerland
Political refugees Congratulations. Your stupidity has reached Europe. Tell you what I suggest, either return both animals and save some face with the public or send both of the deer here to Switzerland where I'm sure they will be accepted as political refugees. Mark Green, Switzerland
