1. Oh, man...
I wish we could get enough of them to block a filibuster. Wouldn't Bush crap in his pants if that happened?

2. We need 11 GOP to get to 60 because of Leiberman and
who else among so-called "Dems"?

6. Leiberman won't be there.
He's observing the Sabbath. He NEVER works on Saturday. Part of me wondered if this is why Reid chose Saturday to begin with.

3. If cloture is defeated, why not let them filibuster?
Let them have their spectacle -- the whole country could watch them arguing against debating the merits of the bill.

4. Because they don't.....
There's a standing agreement that no issue will be brought to debate/vote with a 60-vote cloture agreement. Both sides agree because they want to retain the ability to hold things up where they're in the majority.

5. Because they don't . . . what?
I'm sorry, but I'm not following you. Why can't they hold things up with a filibuster, the way they used to?

7. Because, they don't.....
Stand up filibusters, ala "Mr Smith Goes to Washington" haven't occured since the 60's. The Dem's could allow the Republicans to orate endlessly until they all collapse, then slip the vote in, but then they'd have to do the same thing the next time Republicans were in control and wanted to, say, privatize Social Security.

8. Yea, but there's a difference, public opinion is against privatizing social security
And public opinion strongly favors a resolution changing the course in Iraq. We could force the GOP to filibuster every day until they all collapse while their approval ratings drop every day that they do it. Every Republican when they run for re-election will have to face the charge that they physically filibustered a non binding resolution to change the course.

Democrats could filibuster privatization of social security and public opinion would be on their side. Voters aren't going to punish them for saving social security.
