UNLV Student Says Forced By CNN To Ask Hillary Question
CNN and the Questionable Question
By Tobin Harshaw

Tags: CNN, debates, Hillary Clinton

Most observers feel that Hillary Clinton aced the “diamonds or pearls” question at last night’s Las Vegas debate, and many feel that the question was “frivolous,” “trivial,” and “sexist.”
Now the Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder tells us that “Maria Luisa, the UNLV student who asked Hillary Clinton whether she preferred ‘diamonds or pearls’ at last night’s debate wrote on her MySpace page this morning that CNN forced her to ask the frilly question instead of a pre-approved query about the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.” Ambinder continues:
“Every single question asked during the debate by the audience had to be approved by CNN,” Luisa writes. “I was asked to submit questions including “lighthearted/fun” questions. I submitted more than five questions on issues important to me. I did a policy memo on Yucca Mountain a year ago and was the finalist for the Truman Scholarship. For sure, I thought I would get to ask the Yucca question that was APPROVED by CNN days in advance.”

1. Disgusting. Especially when we are at war with soldiers in harms way
for the wrong reasons.

2. Define "forced."
Was she waterboarded?

3. Why do people let themselves be pressured to do stuff like that?It made the student look like a twit
...on national tv. Now she's going to feel embarrassed forever when she thinks about that moment in the spotlight.

So -- NOW who's "planting questions"?

11. Well, she wrote the twitty question. I doubt that she was pressured
to read it. This was her 15 minutes of fame. And if she'd said no, they would have gone on to the next "light" question on the list.

She probably didn't expect the razzing she'd take from her classmates afterwards, though.

4. Remind me again why the League of Women Voters isn't moderating these debates any more.
Wolf Blitzer is an idiot.

5. It was one of the girls OWN questions.

And CNN told her they had covered Yucca earlier in the debate.

“When her Yucca mountain question was asked, she was given the opportunity to ask another question, and my understand(ing) is that the (diamond v. pearls) (question) was her other question,” Feist said. “She probably was disappointed, but we spent a lot of time with a bunch of different candidates on Yucca Mountain, and we were at the end of the debate.”

6. So the frivolous questions were the only ones left?

8. That not the point. The OP said the question was forced.
Edited on Sun Nov-18-07 02:40 AM by wlucinda
They forced her to ask her own question? Frivolous question or not, it was HER question.

And I see nothing wrong with ending the debate with fluff. Or Asking Obama about halloween during the last debate.

10. CNN wanted a "light" question for the close. She could have said no,
and they would have used somebody else's "light" question. But she wrote it, and she agreed to ask it. Nobody forced her to do anything.

She's just embarrassed because she's taken some razzing from her classmates for the question she wrote.

15. Where did I say that? All I said was that she's not being accurate.

And some people here are acting as if CNN coerced her for some nefarious reason, which is ridiculous.

13. Exactly!
Or said something like, 'I have one question that I want to ask you, and then CNN wants me to ask you this other question.'

Put the cards on the table. Name the charade right there and then!

9. She's fibbing. She wrote the question, they asked if she would read it.
She said okay.

By no stretch of the imagination can she say she was "forced." They wanted a "light" question for the close. If she'd said no, they would have said fine -- and then asked someone else.
