Remind me why our government is friendly with S.A. again?

This is why I hate it when the US government tries to pretend we are fighting for human rights and freedom in other countries - it's such a load of horse shit.

1. I know, I was so pleased when I read the First Lady's statement
condemning this travesty.....oh....wait.....let me re-read this article.....there is NO statement from the First Lady who supposedly champions women's rights in the Middle East, despicable, imo.

11. This in no way lessens or augments the outrage - the man she was with was also raped
And also sentenced to 90 lashes. Her punishment was increased when her lawyer appealed.

The gang rape was obviously part of a sort of 'social enforcement'. It's disgusting.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/11/17/wsaudi117.xml

According to the Arab News newspaper, the woman was gang-raped 14 times.

Her offence was in meeting a former boyfriend, whom she had asked to return pictures he had of her because she was about to marry another man.

The couple was sitting in a car when a group of seven Sunni men kidnapped them and raped them both, lawyers in the case told Arab News.

The former boyfriend was also sentenced to 90 lashes for being with her in private.

14. Holy Shit! the story is worser than first reported
Edited on Sun Nov-18-07 06:19 PM by LadyAziz
14 times!, good heavens I hope they get help both mentally and physical.:-( Now, no man will marry her, the rape will be a social stigma for the rest of her life.

I will never understand why they charge the victims . The Saudis and those like them are sick and immoral.
Her former boyfriend's rape remind of the recent rape of a 15 yr old French boy in Dubai.

Sick pigs I hope they suffer the worst fate imaginable.

I totally agree w/ you on the social enforcement part also it might be a religious thing. The woman is Shia and they are Sunni.

23. Thanks...I learned a lot from a 16 year old Girl many years ago.
Edited on Mon Nov-19-07 07:53 AM by BlueJazz
She was the Daughter of a Friend and had been raped by her former boyfriend. While talking to her..(I was 19) I made the stupid statement
"I understand, I know how you feel"
She looked at me with tears in her eyes and said: "How can you say such a cruel thing"

I thought about it and was ashamed of my Ignorance and my...um...well..Ignorance.

I'm a little wiser now..

Oh..The Boyfriend went to Prison for 7 years.

27. a tough lesson to learn
I think too many men, overall, simply cannot understand the reality women face in that a great percentage of the male species could strangle us with their bare hands. A man could never understand the overall fears women face simply in daily living.

4. Her lawyer got
punished too. Wasting the court's time by defending her.

This story serves to remind us how lucky we are to merely live in what is slowly becoming a republican utopia.

5. "The court also banned her lawyer from defending her, confiscated his license to practice law and
summoned him to a disciplinary hearing later this month."

WE (the US Government) are friendly with the Saudi Royals because they signed on to pump their oil to help us as long as we user our military to keep them in power. The Saudi Royals made this deal with the bush crime family. Now that they are running out of oil we (our Corporate Controlled Government) are looking to get their oil fix by military might directly in Iraq.

Any other questions?

6. There's more to this story than meets the eye
For instance, she was in a car with an unrelated male, which is what the original 90 lashes were for. Secondly, she's Shi'a, in a majority Sunni country. Closer investigation might have identified her, rightly or wrongly, as one of the few women there willing to risk death to be prostitutes. My guess is that there are many factors that aren't being discussed for the now fatal punishment.

This isn't to condone it in any way. Having one's insides torn up from a gang rape is punishment enough for violating morality laws. Her attackers, some at least, are in jail awaiting lashes of their own. My guess is that they tried to lessen their own punishment by increasing hers and it worked.

Whabbism is an evil, but as long as our government props up the Saudi royal family, we have to know that outrages like this will continue to occur. Until and unless such outrages finally add up enough to overthrow that family, be prepared to hear about more of them.

The laws shouldn't exist in the first place -- this sentence makes it sound as if she somehow deserves to be punished for breaking laws that take away fundamental human rights.

They didn't cover this story at all. Not word one.

As for the Saudis, we've long known that they are no friend to human rights but we've turned a blind eye towards their continued abuses because...well...they've got oil.

The torture is spread out and the cuts allowed to heal some in between. It's no fun torturing them if they die to quickly you know..... :sarcasm:

15. But Saddam had rape rooms!
That's why we had to invade, don't you know?

Shit, a significant chunk of humanity is so backwards, it's almost beyond comprehension. It's times like this when I think if an asteroid took out the earth, it would almost be worth it.

26. i have a book
called 25 Human Rights Documents and they're all pretty much the same except for "The Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam".

Totally different idea of human rights. Human Rights only apply when the Koran dictates it.

Cheap copies of this book can be had by contacting the Center for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University. They probably even have a website.

A good reference and interesting reading...
