Soldier arrested for being AWOL.... At VA Hospital

Here we go supporting those troops again...

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A soldier facing his second tour of duty in Iraq said in a jailhouse interview Monday that he was at a hospital seeking mental help when he was arrested in the middle of the night for allegedly being absent without leave.

Spc. Justin Faulkner insists his superior officers at Fort Campbell knew about his mental problems but refused to provide adequate treatment.

On Thursday, Faulkner checked into a Lexington VA hospital, where doctors told him they wanted to keep him until Monday for observation. Police showed up at the hospital shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday to take him to jail.

"It's humiliating, degrading," Faulkner, 22, of Stanton, said in an interview with The Associated Press minutes before his release from the Fayette County Detention Center. "It's made me lose respect for the military. To come and arrest me at the VA, it wasn't like I was trying to hide, trying to run. I was getting help. I am being punished for getting help."

The guy has PTSD. The cops let him go provided he reports for duty to be shipped back to Iraq.

This is how we treat our soldiers. No wonder desertions are at an all time high.

1. How to support the troops, eh?
This is the kind of thing that happens in a fascist state. This is the beginning of the shift to totalitarianism.

America is no longer the home of the free.

20. And certainly not the land of the brave for the brave would not tolerate any elements of a
totalitarian state: you know, like give me liberty or give me....

2. "No wonder desertions are at an all time high." So are suicides
We're all being used, but none so badly as our military.

5. What I can't figure out is why not the MP's?
Why send a local cop to deal with a federal issue on federal grounds.. This whole thing stinks.

12. Patriot Act? We know we're hurting for trained military people.
The line between our "peace keepers" and the military is being blurred over and over and over.

24. The VA
has their own Federal Police Officers, I am surprised that the Local Cops were allowed into the facility.

19. A few things I am curious about--usually it ain't 'cops' until they're in a deserter status.
The police aren't even given the list of AWOLS (less than 30 days gone). Just the deserters (a month or more).

Someone at the VA had to CALL those cops, to let them know the guy was there and what his status was.

That's what I suspect.

I wonder if the police blotter would confirm that suspicion?

6. Because we live in a FASCIST society where every BADGE trumps all "puny paper" rules and laws.
But you knew that already.

8. I knew dat! hehe... But I still can't help thinking
that they knew where the kid was, why didn't they take care of it internally? It would have kept the media out of it.. Just seemed a little strange, but I was never in the military so I don't know what the protocol is for this sort of thing. Maybe TahitiNut can enlighten here...

16. That's how FASCISM works. It first blurs, then ERASES the distinctions between Police and Military.
Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 01:48 AM by dicksteele
Look at these pics of some US Citizens being "Protected and Served"
by the "Police" their tax dollars paid for:

Cops are soldiers, soldiers are cops...and everyone
not wearing a uniform is "the enemy".

Welcome to Amerika. Ya might as well get comfy, cuz
yer gonna be here for awhile.

10. Remember that incident at Michigan that proud2Blib posted
where a doctor was decked for interfering with police brutality? And, the doctor is being prosecuted, too.

We're there, I think. :(

17. We've been "there" long enough that "they" aren't bothering to pretend that we aren't anymore.
There was that interim period where they felt the need
to keep paying lip service to the "rule of law" as they
violated it regularly....

But we're at the END of that period, and starting to see
the first HONEST examples of naked, "because I say so" FASCISM
filtering down to STREET LEVEL.

It's a BAD thing.

4. Maybe that's why the Lil' Dictatortot had his polyp removal done at Camp David last year?
Because he knew the military hospitals
were on the lookout for DESERTERS, he
didn't dare check into Bethesda Naval
like every REAL President has always done?

11. So, the police show up to a psych ward to take a patient to jail
on his way back to a combat zone.

That'll work. I mean, aside from being inhumane, that'll work in country.

Maybe those cops should have checked themselves in instead.

13. I recall a story about a soldier who was murdered while on a weekend pass
Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 01:25 AM by rocknation
and the military tried to give him an dishonorable discharge for being AWOL! Fortunately, his family was able to hire forensic help. The soldier's time of death could not be determined, but that allowed his family make the argument that since it was possible that the murder took place BEFORE the weekend pass ran out, they HAD to presume he was innocent. The soldier got an honorable discharge with all the posthumous trimmings!

15. By way of comparison, my late father in law's docs kept him in the hospital when the effing NAZIS...
...came for him. Nazis -- the real ones. And the docs in Liege said, Sorry, this man is sick. And then they helped him escape.

But hey, this is the USA, leader of the free world, and we support our troops. We just love them to death.

:sarcasm: and

21. That's horrible... one nitpick though
No wonder desertions are at an all time high.

I haven't seen numbers since last year, but the 2006 desertion rate was the lowest in decades.

22. That's not what I remember reading. I found this link for you:
U.S. Army Upset Over Increasing Desertions.

Since the start of the war in Afghanistan and Iraq the US Army is facing increasing desertions every year. Although the numbers, about nine in every 1,000 soldiers are far below the peak of about 5% reached during the Vietnam war, they are sufficiently large to engage the attention of the Army top brass. In 2007 desertions have jumped 42% over the previous year. Military leaders including Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey have acknowledged that the Army has been stretched almost to the breaking point by the combat. The disturbing feature is that while during the Vietnam war when most deserters were ill paid draftees, the soldiers today are volunteers who are better paid and looked after than at any time in the past.
