I'm legitimately trying to figure out
why anyone would join them. I mean,
I can figure out why rich people want
to be with them... but why would
anyone else?

Little help here, please. Thanks in
advance.

1. Money, power, and selfishness.
Not necessarily in that order.

3. Bigotry

A lot of them see the Repubs as defending the natural place of white men being better than everyone else. That's what's really behind the whole 'personal responsibility' thing.

4. a few reasons -
If you crave structure and authoritarianism in your life (in other words, can't think for yourself).
If you live on fear of everything.
If you use religion as a weapon, rather than a comfort.
If you are greedy and think that you have no role in helping those less fortunate.
If you think that you are "Chosen by God", therefore have no responsibility for living any sort of compassionate life.

As you can tell, I can't think of a remotely attractive reason why anyone would be one.

6. Some reasons I've run across
- family tradition
- they think they'll be rich or at the very least achieve the "American Dream" someday and they believe the repubs will be good for that
- they think everyone should take care of their own - along with this is very little understanding that other people might not have the same opportunities they've had
- sometimes racism - the repubs appear to be very white
- they don't like the government and believe republicans restrict government
- they don't like taxes, see above about government
- they believe republicans are all about small business - and they believe that what's good for business is good for the country

Those are some I've heard beside the "recent" gay bashing and so called "christian" movement

I didn't say they were valid reasons - I said they are reasons I've come across over the years.

support the Republican party are either:

a) Rich
b) A Bigot or
c) An Idiot

13. Because a good chunk of the country is part of it and people like to "belong". Simple, really.
If they became pariahs, socially unacceptable like the Klan is to most people, then they would become a marginal cult like the Klan instead of a really popular one.

19. I would add CFFT
Corporatists
Feudalists
Fascists
Theocrats

These are the four major components of the CURRENT Repub party.
Authoritarianism rules and should not be challenged. Comply, do not dissent.
All power is ultimate and top down (be it a CEO, Imperial President, or God (and there own interpretation of what that God is and what HE wants - not what anybody else's "FAKE" God wants).
There is only the haves and have nots - the middle class is being destroyed. Their only hope is to muddle thru this life and do what they are told and get their ultimate reward after death.

Their party has demonized the Democrats. Another reason is because mostly the blacks vote for the Democrats, so they'll stick with the Republicans. :eyes:

18. I can think of 3 reasons
Delusional thinking- Delulsional, because they never will become rich. But they want to safe gaurd the rich people. Just in case they become rich.

Elitism- The republican party is the 'home' of the rich and powerful. Joining the party is part of a social club. The closest that many will get to being in the same group/class as the rich.

Want less/no taxation. This covers a great majority of them. This group buys the lines that Democrats are for spending tons of THEIR money and Republicans want to conserve it. Talk of 'smaller governments' are code words for 'less spending/less taxs.' These folks also disagree with taxation of the rich. Because they disagree with taxation across the board. There are various degrees in this group. Some want NO taxation for anything. Some agree that we need some taxation and some spending.

I don't agree with these reasons. But they are a couple that I have seen.

20. Why would anyone join any political party?
I expect every candidate to earn my vote by advancing an agenda that appeals to me. I don't ever want a politician to think that I am in their corner just because of the letter that follows their name on the ballot. That's the point at which people begin to get taken advantage of.

Of course, there is a need for political parties, but I am damn sick of our 2 party system. Strikes me too much as a "you're either with us or against us" political process.

A justification for selfishness is very appealing to the childish.

23. I've talked to a few
who always parrot the "too many social programs" line. But make no mistake about it, if they needed a helping hand they would run, not walk to the food stamp office and would think they are more entitled to aid than the poor. Other than that they must think highly of the * economy. Most of these RW voters I've talked to make around 30K per year.
and blame the poor economy on Clinton.

22. There are a lot of reasons
First and foremost is confidence. The Dems at their core stand for open mindedness. This means we do not offer certainty. Instead we offer consideration. We think about and ponder what the best path is. The Republicans insist that they have the one true path. Some people seek the confidence that such a posture offers.

A further reason is distrust of Government. Although the recent administration has reversed this trend and increased the government the standard platform of the GOP is smaller government. It has been suggested that the GOP wants to shrink the government down to the size that it can just fit in your bedroom. Others have suggested that they want to shrink the government down to the size that they can drown it in a puddle.

Economic conservatives still find common cause with many of the GOP old schoolers. In the case where they don't care about the social issues they can still find a fit on the right.

Fear drives most bad decisions.

Fear of change... things we don't understand... things that are different from us... the boogieman.

28. Fear...xenophobia,
a desire to propitiate who they see as 'The Powers That Be' in order to place themselves under their shield or wing or what have you.

"See, Big Powerful Inexplicable Sky Wizard Mr. President? I'm on YOUR side. I really believe in you and support you and believe everything you tell me. See how I hate and try to stop anyone who isn't or doesn't? I KNOW you won't let the bad guys hurt ME if I support you 100%. I'm being good."

That's just MHO...and I'm not being sarcastic either.

29. It's what they're against
Environmentalists that create regulations that keep them from getting jobs.
Minorities and affirmative action that keep them from getting jobs.
Unions that protect minorities and women and gays - and keep them from getting jobs (and raises).
Minorities and women and gays that want equal rights and two mommies and sex taught to their kids in school.
Atheists that want to take prayer out of school.
The whole bunch of loonly liberals that blame America for all the problems in the world when America spends more money overseas than any other country in history.

That's why they're Republicans.

30. I see them as against things
They are against taxes, because they don't give a shit about the less fortunate. They are against women's right to choose, because they want to control women. They are against same sex marriage, because it makes them uncomfortable. They are against immigrants, because they are racists. They are against any religion except Christianity, because they are too biased to understand people who hold different points of view.

Democrats, on the other hand, are pro equal rights, and pro separation of church and state. Democrats want to raise the standard of living for all, even if it means that they will have to tolerate a slightly reduced standard for themselves. They are pro environment, pro equal rights, pro economic rights, and pro human rights.

Republics tend to be narrow minded, and wrapped up in self interest, rather than to see that raising the standard of economics and equality for all is of benefit to society.
