Congressional saboteurs? Don Young gives Abraham Lincoln credit where none is due

By Sam Bishop
News-Miner Washington Bureau
Published February 16, 2007

WASHINGTON — Rep. Don Young on Thursday added his voice to the speechifying about President Bush’s Iraq policy and bolstered it with what he thought was the voice of President Abraham Lincoln.

The man who Young quoted, though, was not the nation’s 16th president but a professor at a Washington, D.C., graduate school.

“I’d like to make a quote,” Young began after being granted his five minutes on the House floor. “‘Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled or hanged.’”

The quote, Young said, came from Lincoln, “who had the same problem this president had with a very unpopular war, the same problem with people trying to redirect the commander-in-chief.”

However, the words Young attributed to Lincoln were written by J. Michael Waller, a professor at the Institute of World Politics. They metamorphosed into the illegitimate Lincoln quote on Dec. 23, 2003, in a column that Waller wrote for Insight, a conservative weekly magazine published by the owners of The Washington Times.

1. Need to tombstone the entry
and label it appropriately. This is what happens when you don't think for yourself. This is what happens when you believe the media and accept what it says/writes without critical thinking. This is what happens when you allow a member of the GOP memorial ostrich-with-head-in-the-sand platoon talk for the citizens of the USA.

4. It's certainly beginning to look that way, isn't it...
Had to do a paper years ago on the Nazi-Aryan eugenics program...not talking about killing people here, but breeding for certain attributes.
They wanted big, tall, blond/blonde, blue-eyed, healthy, physically powerful...but high intelligence was NOT a desired quality.
:wtf:
They wanted people capable of doing what they were told, not of questioning "So, why SHOULD we be doing this?"

Seeing all those Reps give their 5 minutes was a real eye-opener. There are alot of IGNORANT Republican Reps from all over the 50 states, that is for damn sure. All they had to do was open their mouths and bloviate for 300 second, that was enough for me. :wtf:

8. I'm shocked that YOU are shocked!
I'm no longer shocked at anything the repugs have to say. I just can't believe that anyone here would be surprised by their false patriotism. And I don't think they're ignorant, I just believe they don't give a sh*+ what the country thinks.

9. Great opportunity for a Democrat to read the TRUTH into the record.
...and while she or he is at it, they can add that Lincoln was a GOOD Republican -- one who told the TRUTH and put the Constitution and country ahead of the party and self-interest. That would help corrct the record.
