Can we talk Cell phone companies?
I know there are oodles of people who detest cell phones. I can only promise you I do not use mine while I'm driving, in a restaurant or at a movie. You'll have to trust me that I'm a courteous cell phone user. But bottom line is that I am in a position where I must have one.

My current company called me last week to remind me that my contract is up for renewal. I responded that I had not made my decision what to do because I was unhappy with their decision to release phone records to the government without a warrant. (Conversation was supposedly recorded, geez I hope so!)

Anyone know of a telecommunications company respecting the Constitution and U.S. statutes?

1. Working Assets
http://www.workingassets.com/

The only left-wing phone company. They do a lot of advocacy stuff. Even sent alerts to impeach Cheney on their phones and directed you where you could text to impeach. Very nice and not expensive either.

7. Just make sure you get reception in your area before you order
As much as you may want to use one provider over another, there is nothing worse than having a contract and getting no reception--having to stand outside in the rain to make a call.

Reality hits idealism.

2. I think Qwest or Quest was the only phone company
that refused the NSA's request for warrantless info.

4. I use a Tracfone...
Edited on Wed Nov-21-07 10:16 AM by Bruce McAuley
I'm not a big cell phone fan either, but the Tracfone has worked out good for us. You buy the minutes at Radio Shack or on the Internet(I use eBay), and it works out to about $68 for a one year card with 250 minutes. Extra minutes depend on the deals offered on eBay, but looks like about $30 for an extra 120 minutes.
It costs more to buy the minutes directly from Tracfone, maybe 50% more, but the reception everywhere I've used it is very good, at least here in Washington State, and I live in an unpopulated area.
Plus you're not tied into a calling plan by your company. Buy the minutes and use them, simple as that.

11. That's what I use.
At the most it costs me about $10.00 a month. Here's the problem. Tracfone in my area uses the Verizon network because Tracfone doesn't have it's own network. Verizon is accused of maintaining databases just as AT&T is.

12. Yup, they use the Verizon network here too...
The only saving grace might be that Tracfones can be purchased and activated anonymously.
Actually, I'm certain the government has a recording of EVERY cell phone conversation since 2003, or at least a list of every call made by every cell phone made since then.
This is just the tip of the iceberg.

9. I just checked into Working Assets...they changed their name
I clicked on their ad on Raw Story, and was very interested. I have AT&T and feel dirty every time I use my phone (but I always say "hi" to George!). Unfortunately, their coverage area is still pretty sparce, at least in the areas I need it. And too many areas on their coverage map where they didn't even know if they had coverage. Too bad. I'd LOVE to get away from American Tapping & Tracking.

10. Their coverage map is odd. Almost turned me off....
but then I discovered they use the Sprint network so it can't be too sparce. The map seems absolutely useless. Especially since some of the color coding is too close. Or is that my bad eyesight?
