Presidential Hopefuls as Sports Figures
Frank DeFord, one of my favorite radio guys, had an interesting take on Presidential hopefuls on Morning Edition (NPR) today:

Morning Edition, November 21, 2007 ·

How do politicians resemble sports figures? This is our usual quadrennial exercise, but because the primary calendar has been moved forward, we also have to come out now in order to stay ahead of Iowa and New Hampshire. So:

If Barack Obama were in sports, he would be Roger Federer. So stylish, so smooth. We just don't know yet whether Obama is the stylish and smooth Roger Federer of 2002 who didn't win, or the stylish and smooth Roger Federer of 2007 who wins almost everything...

Mitt Romney thinks he's Derek Jeter. Of course, he used to think he was Alex Rodriquez...

He did miss out on Dennis Kucinich, who could be Yogi Berra with a touch of woowoo thrown in.

1. Kucinich? For me, that's easy. He's Doug Flutie.
Impeachment - it's the Hail Mary Pass. He's "too small" to play in the NFL, so it takes the Canadians to realize how great he is. He becomes the NFL "Comeback Player of the Year." It's all right there.

2. I wish I knew who all these guys are.
I love to listen to DeFord because he talks about sport as metaphor. He is as much fun to listen to and as insightful as Red Barber was.
