Senate Democrats plan to back down (again) regarding Iraq funding
Bob Novak:

Congress

Iraq: True to form, Senate Democrats have begun to back down from their demands to change Iraq policy, setting up a fight with the House and angering their anti-war base.

Congress still hasn't passed a measure funding the U.S. military's presence in Iraq. After the Senate failed to reach 60 votes on a bill that would have placed serious time limits on the occupation, key Democratic senators such as Armed Forces Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and Defense Appropriations Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) agreed they needed to weaken the measure.

With House liberals demanding a firm withdrawal plan before agreeing to fund the war, Democrats are in a bind. The likely outcome will be a measure demanding policy changes but not placing any hard time restrictions on the administration-a toothless measure, ultimately.

Iraq policy has been the hardest issue area for the Democratic majority, which was elected primarily in opposition to the Bush Administration's management of the issue. A combination of Senate Republican firmness and Democratic timidity at managing a foreign policy mess almost guarantees that any changes in Iraq before 2009 will be freely chosen by the lame-duck Bush Administration.

4. Hey, what happened to the goals from last time?
I forgot all about that. What ever happened to those benchmarks that would have to be met by September?

5. You actually quote humanevents and chickletface?
And then seem to believe it as though it were gospel... kind of odd for this site.

It's not healthy to expose yourself to that level of toxic idiocy, which should be minimized as much as possible.

6. Novak has a rep to maintain like everyone else
Just because I don't agree with his point of view doesn't mean the guy is lying all the time. If so, he'd be run out of the business.

12. He does lie all the time, that's his thing.
Novaks rep is to be a stooge for the GOP and especially the neocon nutroots of the traitors that run that party. Novak should be in prison for outing a covert CIA agent and the fact that he still gets a stage on the POS site humanevents does everything to show that they are constantly full of shit too as though anything needs to be shown about those clowns.

As far as legitimate journalism goes, and for what it's worth these days, Novak has already been run out of the business. Short of partisan oped pieces nobody publishes that prick anymore and I can't think of a single real news source that actually even calls him a journalist.

9. Levin MUST go.
Here in MI will do what I can to get him out. It seems as if these dems feel that they are infallible. It`s time to show them that they are not in cushy jobs reaching for retirement for which they seem to feel entiteled. NO ONE is irreplacable. It`s the same with Nancy and a lot of the rest of the dems. "WE ARE THE PEOPLE", what part of that don`t "they" understand? Levin does what his corporate masters tell him.

10. Oh goody, another unsourced spunkspew from Novak
Do you see one direct quote from a named source in any of this? Novak's jacking off on his terminal again, and there's some whore willing to swallow it down.

Sorry for the crude language, my easily-offended friends at DU. But sometimes you have to call it like it is.

13. Can you prove Novak's report is accurate?
And how could you certify any such thing? Novak's betting on a 50-50 proposition, but even if the Senate Democrats cave, it doesn't prove that Novak's reporting was accurate.

As I said, it's unsourced spunkspew from a discredited columnist who just did the exact same thing last week.

14. That's complete bullshit and you know it.
If Novak reports something outrageous, then its wise to question it. But when he reports that the Dem leadership is about to cave for the umpteenth time, its time to accept it unless someone is reporting the opposite.

FYI, I can't prove the local weatherman's report is accurate either. I can't even prove that the New England Patriots are undefeated. What kind of question is that?

16. Beg pardon?
You asked if I'd retract my post if the Democrats cave. I said no, because Novak's column would still be spunkspew, and I'd have nothing to retract. Now you come frothing at the mouth and calling bullshit?

Up yours. :hi:

20. Oh dear
Please label your posts as being from a mouth-breathing Republican. If I had known sooner, I would have typed my responses a LOT slower.

Sorry you're not smarter, and sorrier still that Novak's "reporting" is and remains spunkspew. I'll leave you alone with the column now.

15. I don't like Novak but he's probably on firm ground here
Given the sum of what I've seen since the Democratic congressional majority took over in January, seeing them cave on this point (hardly the first time) would not surprise me at all. Especially given the recent upped rhetoric about how successful the "surge" has been, we're not likely to see any spontaneous displays of Democratic spine on this bill.

18. I don't need a republican hack to tell me what I already knew.
Political posturing will continue for another year. Torture will continue another year. Seizure without warrants, arrests without warrants, etc. will continue another year for politics. At least a year, maybe forever.
