A White House Awash In Lies
Filed under: Scandalous, Propaganda, General — Mark @ 4:03 pm

Former White House Press Secretary, Scott McClellan, is joining the ranks of castoff Bushies to belatedly embrace truthfulness in advance of the publication of a new book. This is a disturbing pattern amongst public figures who lie while in office and then recant their deception, after they’ve been ejected from their perch, with a tell-some memoir of their nefarious official activities.

snip//

This admission of administration dishonesty could rise to the level of impeachability (as if we needed another reason). It demonstrates a deliberate effort on the part of high ranking officials to mislead the public and to obstruct justice. And it is telling that this criminality was shepherded through the White House press machine with the complicity of McClellan who was either terminally naive or incompetent.

While it is useful that these revelations are coming out, it is galling that it took so many years to do so. The administration has successfully quashed any discourse on the issue by refusing comment when the case was being actively litigated and then declaring that it was old news when the litigation came to a close. Both of McClellan’s successors, Tony Snow and Dana Perino, are just as guilty of covering up this affair as McClellan was. When asked to comment on the McClellan book, Perino said:

“The president has not and would not ask his spokespeople to pass on false information.”

That contradicts the president who admitted that he does lie to the press when it suits him, as it did when former defense secretary Don Rumsfeld resigned.

Contrary to Perino’s protest, the President, along with many of his top advisers, is simply not to be trusted. And the same is true of the mouthpieces like Perino, Snow and McClellan, who will do and say whatever their leader asks of them. They will prevaricate obediently and then, many years later, seek absolution through the purifying glow of book publishing and million dollar advances. The rest of the media will largely ignore this misbehavior because they are either too stupid to ferret out the truth, too frightened to report it, or too compromised by their own involvement or dreams of future book deals.

1. i wonder how many in Bush's Circle of Lies are praying this ...
from psalm 28 verses 3 and 4 ... and I wonder how many more will be making such a prayer ...

"Do not drag me away with the wicked,
with those who do evil,
who speak cordially with their neighbors
but harbor malice in their hearts.

4. Repay them for their deeds
and for their evil work;
repay them for what their hands have done
and bring back upon them what they deserve."

This prayer really clicks for me ... it is as if one is petitioning God to ... keep the wicked (evil bushes and their ilk) from doing any more harm, to keep them from implanting their state of lies, deception, and implementing their state of jackboots and fascism.

It is a prayer which I hear as , Clear the Way, Lord, Clear the Way for goodness and truth and honesty to flourish once more and hopefully forever.

2. Although I'm ecstatic to see Scotty come clean(?), I am a little leery...
Scotty never impressed me as having the "ahems" to come clean like this. I may be extremely suspicious anymore, but something doesn't smell right...just as it doesn't with Rove saying Bush could sink the GOP.

Something's up.

4. Per the talking heads this week, everyone seemed to think
Snotty was irate to be put in a situation where he was forced to lie. He got memos from Cheney and Libby telling him to call a presser and telling him what to say. Maybe he has a shred of integrity and thought that was beyond his job description.

I don't see how this could benefit this admin in any way and really expect to hear from someone in the judiciary...once they finish this vacation.

6. I know and I hope that is correct, but there is a nagging something...
in the back of my head that says, "Don't trust this disclosure." There may not be an advantage right now, but they are still in Rove-mode and God only knows what is ahead. I keep thinking he was probably warned not to disclose any secrets...NOT to write a book.

I don't know how far back they go...how strong his true loyalty is. Just thinkin'.

3. So long as the lies can stay covered up...
There is no reason for impeachment. Let's find someone with the backbone to uncover the lies and then determine if it is impeachable.

7. And while we're on the subject let's not forget the role of the media.
When McClellan issued his lie the major news outlets were in a hurry to help him with his work. "There is not story here . . . because Scott McClellan said so" is the way I remember it. With that the issue died.

I also remember the reaction on this very board. Many were in disbelief how the media could buy another obvious bill of goods after being made fools of in the run up to the war.

If it takes retiring officials who suddenly grow a conscious to give us a look at the truth we are in serious trouble.
