NOW on PBS here tonight is all about ALASKAN politicians and
how crooked they are if anyone cares or gets this show. Said lots of these guys are going down and the FBI has thousands of hours worth of tape.
7:30 PM CT it started in Houston.

1. Thanks, Sister,
for the PM. It was prominently reported in this morning's newspaper that this would be showing tonight, so we will definitely be tuned in. This has been big news in Alaska, and we're all holding our breath waiting to see who will be next to fall.

6. Hi, yourself!
:hi:

Thanks for the heads up.

I've been following the Alaskan political meltdown with great interest. It's an underreported story for sure.

Blue-In-AK and I have traded a few posts as well.

I'll weigh in as soon as I can watch it here way out west.

7. Personally, I've been pleasantly surprised.
Of course, since she's a Republican I didn't vote for her, but she has been ruthless in taking on Big Oil and corruption, much to their dismay. (That far-off moaning sound you hear is BP, Conoco-Phillips and Exxon whining.) She literally destroyed "Frank the Bank" Murkowski last year in the primaries, and has had no problems standing up to Ted and Don. She managed to convince the legislature to overturn last year's tainted oil profits tax during a recently concluded special session (they just raised the tax from 22-1/2% to 25% on profits, retroactive, and with safeguards against the oil companies writing off their own negligence). She's a social conservative, but so far hasn't tried to push that agenda, which is much appreciated. She currently enjoys an 81% approval rating here, which is pretty phenomenal for any politician anywhere, so you have to give her some credit.

We met her last year on election day buying snacks in a convenience store while we were campaigning for Diane Benson for U.S. House. She's very down-to-earth, friendly, just a regular Alaska girl. If she continues on as she has so far, I don't think there's anybody in the state who could beat her next time around.

accept she's a rethug because she sure doesn't act like one, at least from the bit I heard tonight. It must feel great to know someone is working 'for' you and your interests instead of not acknowledging them, as we've become so accustomed to.

She acts like governor for all Alaska -- EXCEPT the good old boys, and they don't like it one bit. They are fond of calling her "the prom queen."

36. Maybe that's why she backed down on the 25%
and why she's tried to align herself with the Dems, her "bipartisan majority." It wouldn't hurt my feelings any to see her fall.

15. And Ted Stevens has new problems...
Edited on Fri Nov-23-07 09:33 PM by Blue_In_AK
In case you missed it -- http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A11550-2004Nov25?language=printer re no-bid contracts to Native corporations under a law that allows them to operate as a "disadvantaged small business." Only one problem with that -- this particular Native corporation (Chenega) is worth $480 million -- hardly disadvantaged.

Ted's always happy to throw these contracts to the local Native corps so he can pontificate on how good he is for the Natives.

ed. This is an old article. I can't find the new one that ran in today's paper, but the gist is the same. Ted's into the corruption so deep, I don't see how he can ever get out.

16. He's proved to be a very slippery guy, as has his son, but I do believe
he won't make it through this scandal. Stevens and Allen go 'way back' per the program. They were thick as thieves.

To hear he's used the native Alaskans for his own wealth and aggrandisement should do him in.

17. You'd think they were playing poker, the way money is shuffled back and forth
Let's see, oil and gas gives to Steven's PAC, and Stevens gives to other politicos, then those politicos give to Stevens ...

No campaign limits (read bribe limits) here, nothing fishy here.

MOVE ON, dammit, Ted's getting mad

Didn't know a thing about Alaskan politics. Unfortunately I think this happens in state politics a lot of places. I'm glad they got caught and hope somebody learns a lesson.

Lobbyists were supposed to spend only 10 hours a month in the Capitol but they were spending 10 hours a day- somebody complained, so guess what, they changed the law to accomodate the lobbyists. This sounds awfully familiar...name your state, substitute the industry doing the lobbying...

There wasn't much mention of Don Young, or how he was also wiretapped. This program could have been twice as long.

Maybe Young will be getting his own 30 minutes of infamy

34. I noticed that, too,
although I guess there's only so much you can cram into 25 minutes. I'm somewhat concerned about the fallout from this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/20/AR2007112002009.html The Daily News this morning said that it's unclear what effect, if any, this will have on our ongoing investigations here. It would be the height of irony if our criminal legislators get off the hook because of William Jefferson.
