Ex-customer leaves $15,000 in his will to grocery store worker

By TONY RIZZO
The Kansas City Star

To Eva Betts it was really no big deal, just simple courtesy toward a person in need.

But to the quiet, elderly man she helped from time to time, those acts of kindness apparently made a much larger impression.

On Tuesday, after a long shift at the Brookside grocery store where she works, Betts opened a letter and discovered a $15,000 check that the elderly man left to her in his will.

A disbelieving Betts figured that it was some kind of bank promotional gimmick at first. After all, $15,000 checks don’t just come in the mail every day.

But the next day, she picked it up and read it again. That’s when she noticed the name Karl Hanzelius. He was the regular store customer whom Betts helped with his shopping and even visited in the hospital when he was sick.

1. This happens every day in other lines of business.
For example, it's quite common for customers to use their wills to leave large sums of money to dry cleaners, credit card companies, auto mechanics, telemarketing firms, and Microsoft.
