Another Repub Sen to RESIGN --TRENT LOTT .... reports MSNBC LINK
http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Lott_expected_to_announce_resignation_as_1126.html

Soon we won't have Trent Lott to kick around anymore in the US Senate.

MSNBC reports that insiders indicate Trent Lott will announce his resignation from the US Senate, maybe as early as today.

Speculation as to the timing of Lott's resignation is that he is trying to avoid new, tougher ethics rules that take effect Jan 1 which would have imposed a 2 year prohibition on engaging in lucrative lobbying of Capitol Hill on behalf of K Street if he waited to resign.

Yet another Repub seat to be defended in the 2008 Election.

1. Woo-hoo! The racist is gone!
I kind of doubt we could pick up that seat...Mississippi is pretty reliably Republican...but seeing that loathsome racist gone is worth it!

9. Yep...There's Something Rotten In Gulfport
You'd think HairHelmet would have socked away enough money (above and below the table) to enjoy a two-year vacation. The law doesn't prohibit him from hitting the Rubber chicken circuit and it sure hasn't stopped DeLay from setting up shop on K Street.

I wonder if Mukasey is shaking things up at the DOJ is sending some cold shivers throughout the beltway. Maybe, just maybe, the adults may be back in charge.

16. Good Connect...
Considering all the oil out in the gulf, the high prices, VECO and the recent revelation that the probe has moved to Washington, you may be onto something.

The lobbying aspect doesn't wash as there are many other ways he could cash in while the clock runs on his eligibility. He surely would be a "guest anal-ist" and pull down some good coin speaking at colleges and fundraisers to keep himself very busy for the next 2 years.

Gym Teach Denny just called it quits to bank the millions he's raised over the years...but that was no surprise. Rumors came out early and often...as it did with John Warner, and, inversely, forced Cochran to announce he was running for re-election (now that seems even more suspect). Lott's too much of a big mouth to keep something like this under his hairhelmet. How many times have we seen over the years a leak that surely came out of his piehole.

Yep...he's got something he's hiding. Timing is just to suspect. He's sneaking out the back door.

10. Dems should call on Lott to 'honor' the new ethics rules due Jan 08....
And make a public pronouncement that no Senator should resign their seat to avoid complying with new ethics rules passed on their watch which take effect in less than 2 months.

If Democrats remain silent and allow Lott to 'slip out the door, and avoid the lobbying ban in order to make a ton of money' then the public will take that to mean that the new lobbying prohibitions only apply to certain Senators.

13. They should call on him to honor it
but, expecting honor from a Republican is like expecting a white Christmas at Lott's gulf coast home for Christmas. Nice thoughts, but ain't likely to happen.

15. Well if Lott is going to avoid it, he should be asked the questions and have to defend it publicly..
Allowing Repubs to openly violate ethical standards should bring strong public condemnation.

It really is easy.

If the new law that goes into effect Jan 2008 was passed because it was needed, then the avoidance of the teeth in the new law should be highlighted for all the world to see.

It is part of going 'toe to toe' with the very people who perpetuated the corrupt system that must be fixed.

17. Even if several senior Dems call on him to honor the law
Will anybody in the media pick it up where Lott will be forced to respond?

it might make a small blurb on page B6 in some newspapers if a local senator calls on Lott to do that.

19. I wonder...........Is THIS the guy Larry Flynt has the goods on? THAT was the first thing that came
to my mind. Larry said he has the goods on a Senator that would blow up Washington D.C......Could it be? Would Flynt keep the story under wraps if that Senator promised to resign?
