AJC says Gore called * ahead of visit to make sure he was welcome

IF PEACE PRIZE CAN'T BRIDGE GAP ...

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 11/26/07

For the first time since 2001, Al Gore is scheduled to visit the White House today for a reception hosted by President Bush in honor of America's Nobel Prize recipients.

Relations between the two men —- whose presidential race was among the most closely contested in American history —- are so frosty that Gore reportedly called ahead to make sure he was welcome.

They're not the first political rivals whose relations have been strained.

WARM

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson each defeated the other for the presidency: Adams in 1796, Jefferson in 1800. Their relationship became so bitter that Adams didn't attend his rival's inauguration. But years later, they struck up a correspondence that lasted until both died on the same day: July 4, 1826.

CHILLY

After a bitter 1952 campaign in which Democrat Adlai Stevenson lost, Harry S. Truman, the departing president, was barely on speaking terms with Dwight D. Eisenhower. On Inauguration Day, Eisenhower and his wife refused to come into the White House before an almost silent ride together to the Capitol.

DOWNRIGHT COLD

In a presidential election similar to 2000, Andrew Jackson received more popular votes than John Quincy Adams in 1824. The election, though, was decided in the House. Jackson fought Adams throughout his term. Jackson then defeated Adams' re-election bid —- and helped launch our two-party system.

1. What's to stop the "petulant one" from declaring Gore an enemy
combatant and shipping him off to Gitmo... I'd have brought the Big Dawg with me (and his Secret Service detail) I think, if I were Gore....!

6. Do you REALLY think that would ever happen?
I suppose it's likely that you're intentionally trying to be ridiculous, but there's also a chance that you need medical help.

2. Al Gore is welcome in the hearts of the American people.
* is not. The wrong person asked if he was welcome. He always is. Always will be.

5. Gore's too polite
He should not have checked ahead of time.

He should have just gone there, and stared down the shrub.

7. I heard on the radio this morning that Bush made a personal call to Gore
and that they had a private meeting together before the photo shoot.

10. Shouldn't it be the opposite? Shouldn't Bush have called Gore to make sure he was welcome?

11. That's what a polite host would have done.
Especially given the history, and how nasty Bush has been in the past to Former Vice President Gore.

13. I've heard enough from Al Gore
I'm bitter. I've seen enough photo ops and awards ceremonies. Just go enjoy being rich and leave the fight to those willing to step into the arena.

I still have a bit of hope that Gore will come through for us.

18. Al Gore's "stepped into the arena" daily for the past forty years
What have you done, DL?

Considering the fact he's single-handedly put and kept the issue of global warming into the minds and hearts of millions and is an active agent for change, your words are more than a bit mean-spirited.

21. Oh please.
Would you really rather have a president who was pushed into the job? A man who didn't have his heart in it? Right now, I think the last thing we need is a leader who didn't want to be.

Gore has found a new battlefield, and I wish him well on it. The environment is a worthy cause.

17. I was watching some weekend TV talking head show on Sunday and they said Bush Called Gore Earlier
in the week to make sure he was still coming, something about Bush being worried about how bad his image would drop if Gore stood him up. Then they showed a bunch of photo shop images of Bush and Gore together that were kind of funny.
