Trent Lott Saga Update
- Lott will stay through the year.
- He doesn't know what he will do upon retirement. Maybe manage his sons musical career, maybe teach, maybe coach the Ole Miss football team. He's quite a funny guy. I wonder if it was a live girl or a dead boy.
- Haley Barbour wants to appoint a qualified person. In other words, a Klansman in a suit with conservative values.
- Barbour will not appoint himself.
- Mississippi will vote on someone to fulfill Lotts term on 4 November, presidential election day.

I'm dreaming of a Dem Senate Seat

2. Mississippi is like Florida. They love to vote against their own best
interest. No pick up there.

4. I thought it was 'dead girl' or 'live boy'. A live girl wouldn't be a problem. Ask Vitter...nt

12. "Dead girl" doesn't seem to be much of a problem, either.
Ask Scarborough.

5. Lott Resigns To Enter ‘Lucrative’ World Of Lobbying That He Worked In The Senate To Protect
But I'm sure you already knew this...

Lott Resigns To Enter ‘Lucrative’ World Of Lobbying That He Worked In The Senate To Protect

Earlier today, news broke that Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-MS) intends “to resign his seat before the end of the year.” Lott will explain his plans in two news conferences in his home state of Mississippi later today.

Though the reasons for Lott’s resignation are still unknown, a “congressional official” told the AP that “there is nothing amiss with Lott’s health” and that “the senator has ‘other opportunities‘ he plans to pursue.” NBC News reports that Lott’s “other opportunities” involve joining the “lucrative world of lobbying Congress” before “tougher restrictions in a new lobbying law” take effect:

While the exactly reason Lott is stepping down before he finishes his term is unknown, the general speculation is that a quick departure immunizes Lott against tougher restrictions in a new lobbying law that takes effect at the end of the year. That law would require Senators to wait two-years before entering the lucrative world of lobbying Congress.

“A Lott friend” confirmed to the Politico that the new lobbying law is “a factor in the timing” of his resignation.

6. Your statement that "Barbour will not appoint himself" makes me wonder....
Can a sitting governor appoint himself to the Senate? Presumably that would mean giving up the governorship which would probably be silly, but still....

9. I don't think there is a constitutional barrier to being a governor and a senator.
The constitution bars senators from holding other federal positions, I don't think it says anything about non-federal ones.

10. Barbour said today that he would not take the job
I believe the technique would be to give up the governorship with the understanding that the new Governor would appoint him to the Senate but obviously that won't happen. This might be a good deal for the Dems in 08.

7. As I understand it, he wants to snag a lobbyist job before Jan 1
Afterwards, a new rule kicks in requiring him to wait at least two years.

If he really doesn't know what he will do next, it's the latter.
