Of Nailbiters, Chinese Fingernail Polish, and Electability
"Overheard" between a friend who thinks the Democrats cannot possibly lose the White House in 2008, and contrarian me:

Me: All I'm saying is, national polls don't matter. Same goes for state-by-state closed primary polls. What matter most are state-by-state general election polls, feeding into an Electoral College filter.

Friend: Oh, please! It's not even going to be close.

Me: I care about you. You know that, right?

Friend: Uh, yeah, of course.

Me: I want you to stop painting your fingernails next summer.

Friend: Why?

Me: Because most fingernail polish is probably made in China, and you clearly cannot afford any more lead in your diet. It's gonna be a nailbiter. (And then I did this move...)

(I'm sure she'll come back with a zinger of her own sooner rather than later, but at least for the moment, she seems to be overcome with laughter.)
