...because the EU has passed laws that ban a common Plastic additive (that has already been replaced for the EU market without "financial disaster"), all this and a LOT more is reveled in the new book

"Exposed: The Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Products and What's At Stake for American Power

by Mark Schapiro

If you don't really have time to read this book, at least try to catch Terry Gross' "Fresh Air" Radio Interview with the author Mark Schapiro from today's show!

I'm not sure why the streaming audio of this part of the show is still not at the show link, usually the audio is available by 5:00pm EST, (it should be at this link <http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=16616951>)but you can catch it by listening to one of the West Coast stations on-line program streams, here's a web page with a list of stations streaming this show at 10:00pm EST and at 11:00pm EST (usually the show actually at about 5 minutes past the hour, because of the hours newscast)

<http://www.publicradiofan.com/cgibin/program.pl?programid=17>

Just scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for the stations in Bold type

Or read the review at this link: <http://www.buzzflash.com/store/reviews/721>

1. and still there are those that are convinced that autism is caused by vaccines
I'd like to see research done to correlate the rise of autism with the increase of Chinese imports.

2. It's not just Chinese imports, China just passed a new Law Banning Electronics with toxic metals...
Edited on Mon Nov-26-07 10:20 PM by Up2Late
...in CHINA, following the lead of the EU, but since the U.S. doesn't have any law regulating such toxic electronic items, all the rejected products (or products manufactured using the old toxins) are coming HERE!

The author say that since the EU is now a bigger consumer market (than the U.S.) the EU is now leading the way, NOT the U.S.!

This really sucks. :evilfrown:

Oh, and California is banning the toys with the Toxic additive as of 2009, but the rest of us are sh*t out of luck.:banghead:

3. This Fresh air shouldn't be missed! I wish some of the Dems in leadership rolls
would listen to this and hear how stuff banned in the EU (where it sounds like elected officials place their constituents health before corporate profit (although they made it sound like it wasn't even more expensive for the EU). I didn't hear the entire program but fully intend to.

7. Those are almost all lead I think...
...just make sure you wash your hands before you eat after handling them and you should be O.K.
I'm not completely sure, but I think it would take a very long time for Lead to penetrate the pores in your fingers, the danger is getting in your mouth.

12. I'd get me one of those Leatherman tools...
...those things need to stay out of the mouth, just like Lead Cristal. They look nice but they shouldn't be used for drinking, lead poisoning is a nasty business.

20. Maybe a few do, but I never did when I use to fish...
...but this guy says he crimps the little lead line weights with his teeth, I never did that.

When I did use fishing wights, I always used the bigger ones and always used pliers or some other tool to crimp them, but I was just a kid, back when I was into fishing, and was too weak to crimp them without a tool. I'm now glad nobody ever showed me that teeth technique, I had enough trouble in school, due to the Lead contaminating my drinking water back then.

9. i was listening to most of the show and...
wondered if he mentioned the lead in ceramic cookware and dishes. US standards are way behind EU and California standards. So, while we take away lead-laden toys from the kiddies, we're still feeding them lead from the plates.

And this is NOT a Chinese problem-- it is OUR problem because we have the loosest standards in the developed, and much of the developing, world.

Our falling behind in standards is also causing us to lose much of our export clout-- nobody wants our shit any more. They want the Chinese stuff that meets their standards.

10. Which is why I replaced all my dishes
with thriftstore Wedgewood that I found and am in the process of replacing the baking dishes with OLD Corning Ware (that used to be Made in the USA).

11. Corning sold CorningWare a few years ago, and...
the new owners don't seem to have the glass production facilities any more. Or the patents, or something.

Anyway, I saw their latest ceramic line of cookware, and it is beautifully made stuff for such a cheap price. Label said Thailand. Did some googling and it's agreed everywhere that their ceramics are lead free. Seems they always have been, and they make a big deal about it.

So, don't worry about the Corning Ware. Me, I need some new au gratin dishes, and theirs seem to be just about perfect.

Then there's Greenport Pottery, a local guy out here who uses unleaded glazes and his stuff is beautiful and functional, if you like stoneware. A bit pricier than Target, but not at all pricey for a local craftsman. If you got one of those guys around, start building a collection.

17. Good to know, I've known, people in the past, who collected that stuff...
...but I think they mostly just displayed them on a shelf in the kitchen. Any idea when the change was made?

19. It a been at least five years
I did a lot of research before I bought my dishes because of the lead concern and I got them at least that long ago. They make a point of advertizing that they have no lead.

I'm not sure why it took so long, but they just changed over to a new audio player, so I'm going to try to put down my tin hat now.
