**Attention DU**! Sell your OWN American made holiday gifts right here on DU! Here's how:
Edited on Mon Nov-26-07 10:54 PM by Blue_Roses
Before I go any further, this idea has been approved by administration

Tired of buying your Christmas wreaths and holiday decor from a department store with a "made in China," tag on it? Then don't.
After talking with several other DU'ers, I realized that there are so many talented people here at DU who don't get the opportunity to show, much less sell their own product or craft. So, after getting some ideas and Skinner's approval, we can officially set up "shop" right here on DU.

Since this is the first year DU has done this, it's going to be interesting to see how this goes, but hopefully, DU will rise to the challenge and make the administration proud of how we can come together to help one another during these difficult times. This is a time of year when many struggle--financially and emotionally--so if you have things that you normally would like to sell, but don't have the forum for it, here's your chance. Even if it's chocolate, cookies, or hats...give it a whirl.

There are still some kinks to work out, so post your thoughts and ideas here. Of course each person can decide how they want to be paid and just like Ebay, know who you are buying from.

Also, one last thing. Skinner has not asked for any proceeds whatsoever from what you sell, so giving a small token or donation of your appreciation, for his kindness in letting us do this would be really nice:)

Now let's get shopping!:D

Add your website or post a picture of what you are selling, how to contact you, and how you preferred to be paid.

9. I didn't mean to be rude, I just meant I don't really get what you're trying to do.
If it's a sort of trading post endorsed or sponsored by DU it really would need to be a totally separate part of the site away from the discussion boards...is that what you're trying to do? I think it's a fine idea, just trying to figure out how you envision it being implemented!
:D

Ebay experience without all the bidding.

The idea started with a discussion about holiday wreaths (I make my own for craft shows) and holiday decor being "Made in China" and sold here. I talked with several other people here on DU and they expressed the same thing because some people make candles, some woodwork, etc.

Those who wish to sell something--of course discretion is still going to moderated--can. Posting a picture of the item or website helps too.

It also could be a good way to just have fun.

The products of my own twisted little mind. They make great gifts for any speculative fiction fans you might know. I wish there were time to arrange for signed copies, but by the time I got the copy and sent them back out...too late.

You can get them in e-book (very environmentally friendly) or trade paperback (not all of them, unfortunately, but the beginnings of three different series, at least.

The kind of stuff the religious right loves to hate...

My wife has a lot of scrap glass she would send you if you are willing to pay the postage. She is a stained glass artist as well, but does not get into the mosaic end of it. She has sold some bags of scrap on Ebay, but would be more than willing to help out a fellow Duer.

Just a thought.

I think this is a good thread to sort out ideas. Maybe setting up a "Shopper's Thread" each day would get people in the habit of checking out the "shop."

Seriously though, doesn't DU already have a marketplace? Perhaps that forum needs to be spotlighted somehow? Or a daily link provided on the front page during the "Season"? Or a special thread devoted to DUers selling stuff during this season? I would definitely buy "DU".

And my kids are desperate for a pony too! Is it big enough for me? I just may have to send a pm....

There in lies the problem with people seeing it. Not well known.

Hmmm...maybe we could just use this as a holiday thread each day. Since there is only one month till Christmas it isn't much use asking for it's own forum. We might could link to the Marketplace though as well.

What do you think?

that would be on the front page - and link to the Marketplace. As long as people saw a post on the front page every day saying something like "Don't forget to buy DU this holiday season! New holiday items "link here" every day!" Maybe some cute holiday decorations on it.

Obviously, I'm not in advertising! :+

15. oil paintings, anyone?
I took two semesters of painting instruction, and discovered I really could 'do' artwork. My style is sort of "Memling meets Magritte" (early Renaissance technique meets surrealism).

I also produce...
-hand-spun woolen yarns (from those 5 fleeces I was given)
-small wooden boxes made from redwood burl (given to me from an estate, the trees have been dead quite a while)

24. I am just getting started selling online...
Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 12:22 AM by ljm2002
...the things I sell are: boxes decorated with tiles, mugs, decorative cutting boards, and tile coaster sets. All have my own photos or artwork printed on them -- and all can be customized with your own photos or artwork -- for example, you could use family photos and have great one-of-a-kind gifts for the grandparents. I do all of the printing and heat press transfers myself, although I don't make the blanks myself. I buy all my blanks from US suppliers but I know some of them must be imported -- the tiles that I use are made in the USA, though, they say so right on the back. I do add value and these really are beautiful items when finished. All of them make wonderful home decor, I use various ones around my house and love them!

Just for DU members, I will give you a 20% discount from now until the end of the year on any order. Just type in this coupon code when ordering: be2df59e34

Payment may be Visa, Mastercard or Paypal.

My primary site URL is: http://www.ljmundystudios.com/

and my web store URL is: http://www.ljmundystudios.com/outlet/

Also I sell stuff on Zazzle -- posters, cards, mouse pads and postage. Sorry, no discounts, I already take the minimum royalty.

My photo and art Zazzle gallery is at: http://www.zazzle.com/ljmundy*

and my fractal Zazzle gallery is at: http://www.zazzle.com/ljmfractals*

(there are some fun fractal holiday cards there right now, with matching postage)

One more thing. If you do order anything from my outlet site, you should order by December 15 for arrival in time for Christmas. I'm not set up for one-day turnaround, and some items take a couple of days do assemble after photos have been transferred. The Zazzle stuff, though, is guaranteed to ship in 24 hours.

I really am just getting started with selling this stuff online, have put a lot of work into getting all of this together, and really appreciate the chance to promote it here on DU. I look forward to seeing others' creativity and making some purchases from fellow DUers! This is great!

(on edit: wow, who knew there was a marketplace forum. guess I'll just copy and paste this over there too, hope that's okay)

57. Here is my recipe
3 T yeast
½ c warm water
1 C sugar

stir together, cover and let the yeast work..when it's bubbly it's done..
........

1 C butter melted
2 C milk warm (don't get it too hot or it will "scamble" the eggs)
6 eggs..beaten

........add to yeast mixture and stir together..

sift in
9 C flour
2 teas salt
.........................

mix well and knead on a floured surface until it's smooth... place the dough ball in a large bowl, set in a warmish place and let it rise...cover loosely with a dampy tee towel..

the dough will rise A LOT.. so make sure your bowl is deep enough :)

...
Punch the dough down, and roll on a floured surface..

Try to make it as rectangular as possible...about ½ in thick..

slather on some softened butter.. be generous with brown sugar...sprinkle with cinnamon...... add a layer of chopped nuts...and gently roll into a long jelly-roll... slice into 1½ inch thick slices..

grease a 9x12 pan and lay the rolls (swirly side up) and let them rise again..

Bake at 350,..tap them and they will sound hollow..

While they are still hot, drizzle glaze on them

glaze....

powdered sugar..milk.. vanilla... mix it until it is thickened but still pours :)

32. T-Shirts, Hoodies, More!
Hi, there . . . I'm a fine artist -- just started a few years ago, & have been favorably mentioned in The New Yorker, for what that's worth. But I'm also political -- made the only short documentary I'm aware of about Cindy Sheehan's first protest outside Bush's ranch, which made it onto Current TV (see http://current.com/pods/issue/PD00595 , or http://www.c-cyte.com/casey/grace_at_camp_casey.html for the 8-minute version, which I prefer).

I also love T's. I like them to have meaning, but also to look really cool & great. AND I design t's cut for GALS -- ladies and juniors -- as well as for guys.

So here's my t-shop on Spreadshirt: https://64030.spreadshirt.com/us/US/Shop . As you'll see, I happen to like black -- so slimming, yet subversive -- but many designs are available in other colors as well as other styles.

The first design, "No Accounting," is about a lot of things, but I definitely had * in mind -- no accounting for voting tastes, no accountability, no accounting for the billions of $$ missing in Iraq, you can lead a horse to water but . . . , etc. (most designs are offered in several cuts and colors for both guys and gals)

Other shirts that might be of interest include:

"Bohemian Grove-ianalia" (starting at https://64030.spreadshirt.com/us/US/Shop/Index/index/page/2 ),

(Design glows in the dark!)

"No Black Box Voting" (starting at https://64030.spreadshirt.com/us/US/Shop/Article/Index/article/No-Black-Box-Voting-1710622 ),

and

"Not One More" (https://64030.spreadshirt.com/us/US/Shop/Article/Index/article/Not-One-More-1752776)

And MORE!

Buy more, and they'll let me upload MORE, NEW designs for free . . .

Thanks!

I think because there was one particular overly-zealous poster who updated the MP page so frequently that they knocked legitimate discussion/news threads off the page. :eyes:

53. Please do
I would like some decorations for Christmas, and was hoping someone would post to this thread who makes some.

I remember as a child on a farm in Maryland my Mom and I would go on long walks through the forest in late November, just to find the holly and other materials for making Christmas wreaths. I sorely miss doing that, as I miss her.

Somehow a store bought wreath from Walmart just wouldn't be the same.

61. Here are some ceramics I painted
Edited on Wed Nov-28-07 10:41 AM by Blue_Roses
I put them in a craft show and also tried selling them on Ebay, but no luck. I love this "cookies and milk" dish for Santa. Great if you have kids who like putting out the "goodies" for Santa.

This is a holiday card holder. It has a little stick that you take off so you can slip your cards on. It hangs on the wall or wherever you need it to.

And this one is my favorite--a Santa Claus candy dish. It holds Hershey's Kisses, M&M's or any other small candy.

60. I love the concept, but it could become a liability nightmare for Skinner.
I would suggest drafting a buyer/seller agreement - just a box to click that removes DU from any liability.

62. I have a picturebook for sale at Amazon.com about a boy who builds a snow-capped mountain
next to his farm.

Buy it here: http://www.amazon.com/Billys-Mountain-Steve-Richardson/dp/0978642201/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1196264088&sr=1-1

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspired by the quest for the impossible dream as written in the literary classic Don Quixote, June 10, 2007
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
Inspired by the quest for the impossible dream as written in the literary classic Don Quixote, Billy's Mountain is a picturebook about a young boy whose passion is the idea of creating a vast, snow-capped mountain amid Kansas' seemingly endless flat plains. At first he tries to build a mountain with dirt and rocks; he persists long after his friends tell him to give up, and a reporter puts his story in the paper. Amazingly, a wealthy and determined old African-American man named Jim learns of Billy's dream and decides to help make it come true. It takes bulldozers, railroad cars, and an immense amount of labor to create the mountain - but once risen the mountain blends with the landscape as the seasons pass and even attracts wildlife to its slopes. Utterly captivating, full-color illustrations done in a somewhat impressionistic style bring this beautiful and heartfelt picturebook to life. The final page of "Billy's Mountain" offers a simple lesson plan for teachers to use, offering questions to ask students such as, "Building a mountain is an almost impossible task. What are some things from the past that people thought were impossible but turned out not to be impossible?"

66. great thread!
Thank you for this!

I had put together a little essay on how I try to slow the holiday pace and reduce the stress by making candles and baking pumpkin and squash breads. I have been making candles and baking bread for decades -- I make average (at best) candles and the best pumpkin and squash breads in human history. I give the stuff to family and friends for the holiday, and also bring extra to food banks etc.

It's great to see other people making things. I will be reading these closer, to decide on some other holiday gifts, etc.

76. Super Cute Beanies with Kitty Ears!!!
Happy Holidays Everyone!

I started my business, Pussycat Hats, about a year ago. I work mostly at craft fairs, holiday boutiques, and conventions. In fact, if you are in the Grass Valley area, swing by Cornish Christmas (Nov. 30, Dec. 7, 14, & 21) and say hi!

You can also visit my website at www.pussycat-hats.com. I'm working on revamping it, but until then it does the job well enough! That's me and my oh so adorable kitty, Amen Ra, on the front page.

My hats are all hand-made with love by yours truly. I work mostly with a super soft chenille yarn, but can also make hats from wool and wool-blends. I also make custom orders. Pussycat Hats are available in many sizes - wee bitty baby, kidlets, and adults. When ordering hats for babies and kids, please include their age. This helps me size up the hats the best. If you could take a hat measurement, that would rock the most!

I take orders through paypal - orders@pussycat-hats.com

Thanks for supporting a progressive woman with her new business! Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday and good cheer for the New Year!!!

79. Here's my contribution...
Makes a great stocking stuffer!

http://www.impeachbushcards.com

* The Spades reveal "The REAL Bush"- his failure and unwillingness to protect Americans from danger and disaster, his alliance with the religious right, and his criminal activities and subversion of the United States Constitution.

* The Hearts describe "Bush's Gifts to the American Public"- budget slashes that effect children, families, veterans, and the victimized families of 9/11. Why does Bush hate America?

* The Diamonds recount the money-grubbing corporate greed of a "CEO President"- learn about the deals and crony corporatism that would amount to federal racketeering charges against normal citizens, all at the expense of the US taxpayer.

* The Clubs, appropriately, cover the "War with Iraq"- the lies and deceit surrounding the quagmire resulting from the pre-emptive conflict that is costing thousands of innocent U.S. and Iraqi lives as well as sacrificing our nation's credibility regarding the non-existant "Weapons of Mass Destruction".

* And as for the Jokers, they expose the most treasonable offenses of the Bush and Cheney administration, in their own words.

There's tons more on GD that will fill that need. This one, well, is only for a short time.
