Help Me Find This Photo of Trent Lott in Leathers & Ponytail ---->>>
Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 12:59 AM by Stephanie

I remember seeing this photo of Lott in his motorcycle leathers at the time (as I recall it was chaps and a leather vest, though I had forgotten about the fake ponytail). I've been searching but can't find it - can you? I don't know, somehow I feel it is relevant to Lott's sudden resignation - perhaps the outfit had dual purposes? Mo Dowd was certainly hinting at something here. Too bad it took so long for whatever it was to drive him from office.

Council Of Trent
By MAUREEN DOWD
Published: May 24, 1997

As he left the White House on Tuesday, Trent Lott threw some gorilla dust at Bill Clinton. (Ross Perot's term for one alpha male trying to out-swagger another.)

Of course, we expect less from our alpha males here. This is, after all, a city where Larry King, John McLaughlin and Alan Greenspan are the major stud muffins. So what if Mr. Lott puts on a peppermint-striped vest and sings the poppa-oom-poppa-mow-mow chorus of ''Elvira'' in a barbershop quartet called the ''Singing Senators''? Or if he attended a motorcycle rally at the San Diego Convention wearing a fake ponytail attached to his helmet?

So what if the onetime Ole Miss cheerleader is a touch prissy, re-ironing his shirts and reportedly forcing people to walk between the white lines in the Capitol Plaza?

2. Apparently it was >>>

Leader of the Pack

Of all the delegates, none arrived making a louder statement than Senator Trent Lott, who made his Harley-Davidson motorcycle growl and bark as he led a vanguard of hundreds of bikers cresting down from the freeway upon the convention scene. The police cleared their path and wrote not one ticket for the many helmetless bikers riding imperiously beyond the law.

Far from the Brando-esque sociopathy of The Wild One, the bikers were solid middle-class Republicans proferring PAC money and fealty to the ticket for all the throbbing pistons, flowing beards and overhanging bellies.

''We're the party of harmony -- all the way from the bikers to the corporate world of America,'' said Senator Lott, a conventioneer who thoughtfully stroked the gray pony-tail stapled to his bad-looking helmet.

3. Harley's require a wide stance for sure.
Nothing like a vibrating hog between your thighs.

Love that leather.

5. "Sen. Lott stared from his bike, a ponytail wig flapping from his helmet."

He must have felt so pretty.

Prominent GOP leaders -- including Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.), House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R- Texas) and Colorado Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell -- hopped on motorcycles in a staged, pre-convention event and road several miles together to the San Diego Convention Center.

Most lawmakers were decked out in jeans, Harley vests and cowboy boots as they sped away on large bikes, including a specially designed Harley Davidson commemorating this year's Republican National Convention.

The group looked as if they were rebels with a cause.

A defiant Sen. Lott stared from his bike, a ponytail wig flapping from his helmet. Just before riding off, he accused Democrats of coming to San Diego to meddle in Republicans' business.

8. Unless a site like maybe bartcop might have them archived...
That four year period from 1996-2000/2001 would not have lent to much posting on anything like a progressive forum, I don't imagine.... If you might have posted them here, did you do a search of your posts in the old old (2001) archives to see if you might find a reference?

11. This is offensive to transgendered and transvestite people. Please self-delete.
While you are making fun of Lott, you're also making fun of thousands of people who choose to dress differently, and you're throwing in a lot of homophobic, gay-bashing comments as well.

You may not know this, but dressing up in motorcycle leathers does not mean that a person is gay. Neither does wearing a ponytail - fake or otherwise. You are perpetuating stupid stereotypes and making fun of people. Please stop.

13. Oh please... Hide the thread then.
I actually have a pony tail, and a leather jacket. What does this have to do with transgendered or transvestites?

14. What does it have to do with being gay? Why is it funny that Trent Lott dressed up in leather?
What's the point of this thread - and the many gay-bashing comments on this thread - if it isn't to make fun of the suggestion that Trent Lott is gay?

As you yourself know, wearing leather and a pony tail means exactly zero about a person's sexual orientation. So why is this funny?

19. Umm to show a different side of this buttoned down Senator?
Do you think all the Hell's Angels are gay? Last I checked, wearing leather and riding a motorcycle conveyed a stereotypical toughness, I suppose, but I don't know that that has anything to do with sexual orientation... The Hollywood version certainly never conveys it as synonomous with gay lifestyle (or at least not the films I ever saw).

But given the popularity of Harleys and the big event in Sturgis, South Dakota each year (that attracts all types of Harley enthusiasts, even families)I do not begin to know where you get the impression that discussion of leathers, pony tails, and motorcycles means 'gay.' I'm sure plenty of GLBT people like motorcycles, just as many people of all stripes...

17. Wow... just Wow....
I never took it that way. I remember the inanity around Pat Boone doing a "hard rock" song a while back and wearing biker's leather. No one suggested that of him... It was just a stunt to break his goody two shoes image--nothing to do with homosexuality or gay bashing.

Take a step back and gain some perspective. Please.

18. Take a look at the posts on this thread. "He must have felt so pretty."
And Pat Boone absolutely has been accused of being gay by folks who think the idea is hilarious.

I think that you are being disingenuous.

21. Searching for a leathers & ponytail photo I found this, FWIW:
Larry Flynt has posted a statement on his site regarding the rumors reverberating around the blogosphere of Trent Lott and his alleged association with escort Benjamin Nicholas. The statement defines ambiguity: "HUSTLER RESPONDS: HUSTLER Magazine has received numerous inquiries regarding the involvement of Larry Flynt and HUSTLER in the resignation of Trent Lott. Senator Lott has been the target of an ongoing HUSTLER investigation for some time now, due to confidential information that we have received."
http://www.queerfilter.com/posts/keywords/target

And this:
Big Head DC, the blog that is claiming a male escort is behind Senator Trent Lott's recent abrupt resignation, has fired back at claims by the escort, Benjamin Nicholas, that quotes in Big Head DC's item were "fabricated".

Now, Big Head DC has published his entire email exchange with Nicholas.

The exchange DOES NOT yet provide any real evidence that there was a relationship between Nicholas and Trent Lott, however, it's certain to be picked apart in minute detail, such as this remark:

Nicholas: "I’m a blogger as well, so I’m well aware that nothing in this world is ever truly ‘off-record.’ Trent is going through his fair share of scrutiny right now and I don’t want to add to it. All I can say at this point is no comment. It’s the professional thing for me to do."

Gaydar activated. Target acquired.

22. That's why I'm looking for it.
I've heard rumors years ago about Lott. And no, I don't think it's the least bit homophobic to OUT closeted homophobes, in response to the posts above yours. Lott is a gay basher from way back and if he is hiding something it is IMO very relevant. This is another instance where IT'S THE HYPOCRISY that needs to be exposed. These self-hating bigots take their rage out on everyone else. That's the problem.
