Bush: "I didn't sacrifice my soul for politics."

http://www.islandpacket.com/opinion/columns/parker/story/89472.html

<snip>

I asked the president if he found comfort in the possibility that, assuming democracy ultimately flourishes in the Middle East, history will vindicate him.

No, he said. Bush finds comfort in knowing that he didn't betray principle for popularity, that "I didn't sacrifice my soul for politics."

Finally, I asked about bin Laden. Bush said getting bin Laden is still important, but warned that his death won't end "extremist views" or the al-Qaeda threat. Only free societies will.

I think he's a sociopath.

Call him all the names you want.

Just water off a duck's back.

Means nothing to a guy who creates his own world around himself.

38. I believe him
The thing is, we tend to operate under the assumption that W is capable of knowing right and wrong. I don't think he is. Based on the man's recorded speeches, comments and attitudes, I think he suffers from stunted emotional development and, as a result, his moral development is similarily warped. He is, in effect, still in Kohlberg's "conventional phase", where one's morality is largely a reflection of those around us. Those around Bush are and always have been, extremist right-wing radicals and as a result, he honestly believes that he has done nothing wrong. Bush isn't stupid in the normal sense of the word but he is intellectually lazy and uncurious. He is the very epitome of that old teacher's phrase "lacks motivation".

Even were he to realise that he has done wrong, his emotional immaturitity and narcissism (probably class-based) prevent him admitting it. W is a product of a social class which views teh admission of an error as far more shameworthy than making that error in the first place and his lack of empathy (see, the stories of his curelty to animals as an adolescent) means he will never, under any circumstances, consider the effects of his actions on others.

Had he been presented to a therapist in, say, 1979 or thereabouts, he could have been taught to deal with all of these problems. While some of them can't be cured, they can be compensated for (as can he seeming dyslexia) but that would have required someone around him to view his actions as needing help and see the above note about admitting error.

39. If anything, Chimpy set back the spread of democracy.
By empowering the extremists and strengthening their hatred of all things American/Western. Oh and that little thing about coddling the most despotic monarchs in the region - the Saudis.

Eerily similar to how Reagan's sabre-rattling allowed the hardliners in the USSR to hang on for a few more years than they would have normally.
