A FAVORITE ARGUMENT A favorite argument of Republicans is to let the free market decide. In fact, “free markets” is the reason that George W. Bush gave for vetoing the wildly popular SCHIP bill that would provide health insurance for children in working class families. He said that if SCHIP was expanded, some children might get insurance through SCHIP instead of private insurance. However, Bush implies in that reason that private insurance just cannot compete with SCHIP insurance. It seems kind of odd that somebody strongly in favor of free markets is saying that the free market cannot compete in this case. If he truly believed in free markets, Bush would have signed SCHIP into law and let the supposedly free market decide if private insurance or SCHIP is better. Or, maybe Bush is really saying that the market is only free if you have donated tens of millions to Republican coffers?
