NH Cop Surprises McCain, Speaks Out Against Drug War
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/matt-simon/nh-cop-to-mccain-drug-wa_b_73439.html

John McCain does a lot of town hall meetings, and he's usually quite pleased to get questions from law enforcement officers, firefighters, and military personnel. Sunday evening at Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, NH, may have provided an exception.

It would be an understatement to observe that this was not the usual question: "I've served here in my state as a law enforcement officer for going on 9 years now, and after nine years working the street, I've come to the conclusion that the War on Drugs is a terrible failure... I have seen firsthand that the War on Drugs causes crime, it causes children to have access to drugs easier, and it does nothing to curb the problem of drug abuse. Just like Alcohol Prohibition after the the 18th Amendment passed, the country wised up and we passed the 21st Amendment which curbed the violence problem in this country greatly. What is it going to take for powerful politicians such as yourself to realize that the War on Drugs is a failure and we need to... we need to get smart about drugs, not tough. We need to be smart."

snip

McCain initially blew him off with a non-answer, but then continued the exchange by asking the officer if he thought methamphetamines should be legal.

17. Defense attorneys don't support the war on drugs
even if it would be in our self interest to do so. NORML was founded by criminal defense lawyers and we continue to be among its most active members. The National Assoc. of Criminal Defense Lawyers has also publically and repeatedly called for an end to the War on Drugs.

6. I refer to the drug war as "Nixon's revenge"
Set up to piss away money and harass the poor in perpetuity. No politician that wants to get elected again will ever oppose it.

7. meth is a red herring
Yes, yes, people who make and use meth are doing something dangerous and stupid. But 40 years ago, no one was making meth or using it. Why? Because legal amphetimines were still easily available, sold as diet pills. Use of them for recreational purposes was stupid, but at least they were made under controlled conditions and you didn't have to worry that some meth lab was set up in the apartment next door. The whole meth "epidemic" is a result of the drug war.

14. Legal drugs have a WONDERFUL advantage: they are cleaner !
They aren't mixed with other things that can make them even more lethal than the original drug.

at the same time that our loving FDA still forces border security to steal OUR seniors' drugs when they come back from canada.

9. Oh Jesus H. Christ, just when you think that McCain couldn't POSSIBLY be any stupider...
"He claimed that most experts agree alcohol is fundamentally different in that only alcohol can be moderately consumed."

What experts? Because this is the single BIGGEST load of bullshit that I've EVER seen with respect to drugs.

Marijuana can't be moderately consumed? Cocaine can't be moderately consumed?

The only drugs that can't safely be "moderately consumed" are the stronger opiates, i.e. heroin, oxycodone, etc.

And THESE are the people in charge? God help us all.

It might account for some of the crazy behavior.

Amphetamines and guns don't mix. Ask any cop.

11. McCain doesn't know shit
I'm surprised he knows anything at all about meth. This is the guy who didn't know if condoms helped prevent the spread of AIDS.

Time to hang it up, Grandpa.
