Sun-Sentinel OpEd: 'South Florida Dems should drop the zany crusade to impeach Cheney'
Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 10:45 AM by seafan
This OpEd appeared in Sunday's edition of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, which covers Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz's constituency. Looks like they're running a tag team to deflect the heat Ms. Wasserman Schultz is surely taking over her opposition to any consideration of impeachment hearings on Dick Cheney.

***Important real time update: Debbie Wasserman Schultz will be holding a local Town Hall Meeting today, Tuesday, November 27 at 2-3:30 pm with her local constituency at the SW Focal Point Senior Center, 301 NW 103rd Ave., Pembroke Pines, FL.

(Hmmm, a Tuesday afternoon at a senior center might just end up being a bruiser for Ms. Wasserman Schultz... but this well-timed local OpEd does all it can to help her.)

Back to the willfully ignorant OpEd in the Sun-Sentinel:

Meet the Editorial Board members here.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel Editorial Board
November 24, 2007

The Democratic majority in the 110th Congress was elected to get certain things done.

.....

Kicking Vice President Dick Cheney out of office shouldn't rank on the list, however.

So, it's OK to roll one's eyes at House Democrats for having backed a divisive distraction, an effort promoted by Democratic presidential candidate and fellow congressmen Dennis Kucinich to impeach the vice president.

Fortunately, enough House lawmakers, including Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, opposed the move. Democrats on Capitol Hill would do better to round up votes for, say, a sensible children's health insurance bill, rather than Kucinich's zany misadventure.

Yes, the Iraq conflict has been a poorly justified, planned and executed debacle. But impeaching a lame duck vice president doesn't improve the war effort.

.....

With respect to Cheney's grand designs against Iran, that last statement is certainly true. He is actively seeking to improve his war effort against Iran. And the Sun-Sentinel aims to help him do just that with ignorant drivel such as this.

This editorial is the work of blind fools.

Here's more from the Sun-Sentinel OpEd:

What's more, the ill-advised impeachment debate among Democrats comes as the Bush administration's surge strategy has helped quell the violence, helping to open a window for political progress in the war-torn country. Democrats ought to focus their energy on prodding the Iraqi government to meet critical benchmarks, because that's the path to a truce in Iraq that would pave the way for the exit of U.S. troops.

Let's be clear here, shall we?

The violence subsided markedly because Blackwater was jettisoned out of Iraq.

The only "benchmark" George W. Bush cares anything about is his oil control grab.

All the talk of "paving the way for the exit of US troops" is now exposed as yet another lie, because just http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071126/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_iraq&printer=1;_ylt=A0WTcV3uKEtHnIQBewkGw_IE">yesterday, this was in the news:

US, Iraq deal sees long-term US presence

President Bush on Monday signed a deal setting the foundation for a potential long-term U.S. troop presence in Iraq, with details to be negotiated over matters that have defined the war debate at home — how many U.S. forces will stay in the country, and for how long.

The agreement between Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki confirms that the United States and Iraq will hash out an "enduring" relationship in military, economic and political terms.

.....

So, Mr. Editorial Board members, Mr. Bush never intends to leave Iraq, now or ever. And he is busily signing *pacts* with his puppet al-Maliki, that will saddle the next administration with Bush's quagmire for decades to come.

Willful, blind ignorance on the part of a major newspaper editorial board is unacceptable.

Dick Cheney can destroy the world in 14 more months. Pull your heads out of your backsides and do your jobs.
