Larry Brilliant on climate change, disease: We'll rise to the challenge

<snip>
Brilliant's answer: humanity's always answered the bell, risen to the challenge. And the new generation of entrepreneurs is "using their wealth in ways their forefathers never did. They're not waiting until they die to create foundations. They're actively guiding their resources, their hearts, their commitments to make the world a better place. Nothing can make you more optimism than that."
<snip>

That's really fucking nice - that fatcat corporations are going to enrich themselves off of massive human suffering the likes of which have never been seen before. How many billions of people will have to die, Mr. Brilliant? :sarcasm:

1. There is a phrase, also used in business....
"Past performance is not a guarantee of future returns."

Heard that one before, Larry?

2. I don't get that.
I see him saying that capitalism is going to have to change it's priorities and obviously, that means people who have wealth. It's a good thing.

We should face the crisis that we have with vigor, but I'm not so convinced that it will still turn out the way we would like. "humanity's always answered the bell, risen to the challenge." No, it hasn't. As a matter of fact, most times it hasn't. Unless you count merely surviving as a victory. Ever heard of Easter Island, or the Mayans? Most 'great' civilizations have imploded.
