They seem to think they are bullet proof, injury safe and don't need health insurance

but I want to thank Michael Moore for his outstanding movie, "Sicko"! I rented it the

day before Thanksgiving and my 19 yr. old refused to watch it, saying it's just another

documentary (translation = not an action film) but I just caught him watching it and

laughing in parts and then his mouth dropped open when he heard the Canadian couple talk

about a guy who had a bill for over $600,000 for a head injury. He looked at me in amazement.

That gave me a segeway to reinforce what I've been trying to get him to understand!! That he

needs health insurance and now maybe he'll push for going full time at his job even harder

or go find a new job!! So, thank you Michael Moore for getting through to my 19 year old! :)

I really didn't laugh at a lot of the movie but he's downstairs right now laughing... out loud!

Whatever it takes!! :D

1. Actually there is a biological basis for that.

I read somewhere that a person's sense of risk is not finished developing until they are in their mid-twenties; the region of the brain responsible for it literally does not finish growing until then. It's interesting because it was a fairly recent discovery, maybe in the last year or two, but car insurance and rental companies have known it for a long time just by looking at accident statistics.

and also showed it to my 16 year old step-daughter. I tongue-in-cheek explained that she was "brain-damaged" (a la Bill Cosby) and here was the proof. But she listened. It remains to be seen if she heard.

2. I know I sure was bullet-proof when I was that age
and into my 20's. I've got the arthritic knees now to prove it!

I've preached to both my kids (mid-late 20's) about the same and I think I finally got through. Not from Sicko, but from relentless nagging.

4. My 19 YO took subways and walked 3 miles Queens to La Guardia Airport at 3am
It was his first trip back east to visit his Gma and on Friday he met a girl on the ferry to/from? Manhatten. She invited him to a party and at 3am they dropped him off at the subway so he could get to the airport for his 6am flight home.

Thankfully he did not tell me this until he was home safe and sound in one piece. But he evidently chose to forget the buddy system while travelling rule. He did say the party of about 10 people was an interesting and diverse group.

Otherwise he knows he is not bullet proof and has chosen purposely not to do some sports/activities as he knew we didn't have insurance. He also has seen Sicko, but from our family experiences with the health care industry he was already aware of most of the content.
