She gave us "The Secret", what other dumb things has Oprah done?
Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 01:26 PM by chaska
I'm not saying that Oprah's endorsement of Obama is dumb. It may be one of her better moves. But this IS the woman who coronated (sorta) GW Bush (remember that appearance on her show, the kiss, etc.?).

Anyway, I'm writing a little article and need some dumb Oprah stuff. Can ya'll help?

Exhibit A: Set Dr. Phil loose upon the world.

Edit: Let me just say, I don't hate Oprah or Obama (he's probably my second choice, actually). But you gotta admit she ain't always a great (or smart) democrat.

Then maybe they should consider her ability to hire screeners in order to prevent molestation as a priority.

Were they supposed to live in them? You need an address to register a car

Insurance companies require an address too. This seems absurd. I don't believe it

Just pointing out that "she gave everyone a car" is an inaccurate statement.

Setting up a marketing exercise and spending one's own cash on a couple hundred cars are two entirely different things.

58. Yes, Pontiac approached her about the car give away.
Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 02:19 PM by Breeze54
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/13/entertainment/main643141.shtml

So far, Pontiac executives are confident. They say visits to its Web site are eight times higher than normal, and that local dealers have reported an increase in calls inquiring about the car, which is reaching showrooms over the next few weeks.

Mary Kubitskey, Pontiac's advertising manager, said the company was looking to reach women, who are Winfrey's primary audience.

The company approached Winfrey about doing a giveaway, but the event grew in scope
— and Pontiac decided to gamble by spending a chunk of what would have been used on traditional advertising, Kubitskey said.

"Quite frankly, we have a car no one has ever heard of. We knew we had to go really big, and she was the holy grail for us," Kubitskey said.

Officials at Winfrey's talk show stress that her motivation for the Pontiac giveaway was to fulfill wishes as part of this season's "wildest dreams come true" theme.

A majority of the audience members were there because a friend or family member had written in about their need for a car. Some however, were just lucky enough to get tickets for that day, said Carly Ubersox, a spokeswoman for the show.

"This wasn't a marketing plan on our end. This was a way for us to kick off our season about wildest dreams in the most impactful way," she said.

Dr. Phil is part of the problem in America. Superficial BS.

If people would start working with each other, listening to each, showing tolerance , we would not have a situation in which a bozo like Phil could make millions with millions rushing out to buy his brand of roll-on deodorant.

8. She got taken in by fabulist James Frey
whose memoir* A Million Little Pieces turned out to have been fabricated in large part.

http://www.cbc.ca/arts/books/the_great_pretenders.html

Compared to O.J.’s crass opportunism, the James Frey scandal seemed tame. But it had wider implications for publishers. Released in spring 2003, Frey’s drug addiction memoir, A Million Little Pieces, had been doing boffo business. In September 2005, it received the ultimate approbation: it became an Oprah’s Book Club pick. Winfrey deemed it inspirational, and as with all of Oprah’s selections, book sales went berserk. But in January ’06, the website The Smoking Gun revealed that many of the book’s claims — about Frey’s drug benders and his subsequent incarcerations — had been embellished. As time wore on, Frey lost more and more credibility. Finally, on Jan. 26, Oprah called Frey and his editor, Nan Talese, to the carpet. On national television, Frey was forced to admit that much of the book was a fabrication. Doubleday, Frey’s publisher, appended a lengthy preface to all new editions of the book. Frey’s agent dropped him. Despite all that, A Million Little Pieces remained a sales juggernaut.

CSICOP Announcement Mailing List

Yesterday, Oprah Winfrey did it again. She devoted an entire program to a guest touting paranormal abilities without providing scientific, critical balance. Medical intuitive Caroline Myss appeared claiming to diagnose audience members using only her "visionary powers." Like James Van Praagh and other guests in the past, Winfrey promoted Myss' books and seminars. Promotional copy for the program from Oprah Winfrey's website is provided below.
http://www.csicop.org/list/archive/0099.html

It might be fun to go through and compile a list of every fraud and charlatan Oprah has helped promote and/or actively endorsed on her show.

As of August 2007, donations to Oprah's Angel Network in response to Hurricanes Katrina and
Rita total $15.6 million.
Over the past two years, nearly 300 homes have been built or restored

Funny how she decides to do the show when Autism hits celebrities like Jenny McCarty & Holly Robinson Peete- not her average viewer who has helped her make her millions. :eyes:

55. Oprah's book choices
But you take recommendations from your family and friends--just because she's got a slightly larger audience, don't hold that against her. Some of the books she picks are crap but some have been really good. She also encourages discussion about them, which isn't something most people do after they read a book and is refreshing. Critical thinking is a dying art form in this country--why be negative about someone encouraging it? Don't be jealous because you don't have a tv show/magazine/empire ;)

Oh right, we're just remembering the bad things about Oprah. :eyes:

64. that man creeps me right out.
feh.
Everyone's allowed some errors in judgement, so I can't hold much against Oprah for making some mistakes along the way. Overall, I think she is basically a good person but a little insulated and naive about what's really going on in the trenches. I was surprised that she was so surprised herself when she did the Katrina story.

57. She can actually do some great shows when she's focusing on an issue.
When she gets credible people on and let's them talk, it's can be a really riveting show. Like when she had on Michael Moore and some shill from the insurance industry. It was a great show. But sadly, most of her shows are about celebrities or consumerism or make overs. And even on the important topic shows she injects herself into everything, which gets annoying.

But I think that's a function of our society, a society that focuses on the superficial. Oprah would go out of business real soon if she only focused on the important things. People don't want to hear about that too often. Fantasy with a side order of reality, please.

On the other hand, there are lot of shows I find a lot more annoying and harmful. Monday Night Football or the general obsession with sports for one.

You can thank Grey's Anatomy for that gem :) And The Soup for burning it into our brains with their repeated showing of the clip of Oprah saying it :)

71. The Secret is far and away
the worst poppycock that I've ever read. I think I threw the book at a tree when I was out reading in a park and got to the part about people being overweight because they think "fat thoughts."

I'm sure lots of people will come up with good stuff, but that's the one thing that totally makes me question her judgement.

73. The main point is how does this impact the primary.
I think to a large extent Oprah's followers/demographic are normally excellent fodder for the Hillary campaign and a natural source of votes for her. Having Oprah endorse and promote Obama vigorously will turn some of those votes as she has MAJOR clout with her sycophants (Oprah, that is). I think this a major feather for Obama and a disaster for the Clinton camp.

75. She had Dr. Phil and a general ridicule Code Pink on stage before Iraq Invasion.
This was back in early 2003. She let them them label Code Pink and anti-war people as unpatriotic because that general said dissent undermines the war effort and demoralizes the troops. One Code Pink lady was reduced to tears.

Well, fuck that shit. I stopped watching her show that day and haven't been back. Haven't missed her much, either.

82. her contributions should be put in perspective
http://www.forbes.com/2007/01/17/richest-women-entertainment-tech-media-cz_lg_richwomen07_0118womenstars_slide_2.html

She's worth $1.5 Billion. So if she were to make a million dollar contribution it really equates to one of us giving $100.00 of our worth. Admirable yes but not worthy of her being lauded to sainthood.

83. This thread is bullshit
Oprah is human, she has done a lot of good and has made some misjudgements.

Overall I feel she has done a lot with her celebrity to help raise money and awareness on many issues that need to be out there.

but what do I know? Dr. Phil's book helped me repair a broken relationship, and I follow the teachings of The Secret everyday. And I'm not ashamed to admit it.
