A Valentine to Future Generations: $8,738,700,362,432.03 - The National Debt, to the Penny, 2/15/07

Already, the GOP candidates are lining up to praise extending the Bush tax cuts.

In 1962:

68% of the budget was discretionary spending
06% of the budget was interest on the national debt
26% of the budget was mandatory spending

By 2006:

38% of the budget was discretionary spending
09% of the budget was interest on the national debt*
53% of the budget was mandatory spending

* That's 9% of a much larger number by 2006, too.

Albert Einstein once said that compound interest is the greatest mathematical discovery of all time - he must have been a lender, rather than the world's greatest borrower.

3. Yet another failure on George Bush's presidency, by this time he wanted
...a national debt of $11.0 trillion and when he departed in January 2009 he was shooting for $13.5 trillion. To do that he really needs a war with Iran and at least one other sovereign nation

5. when the dollar collapses that will be worth a second-hand Camry
Republicans keep saying they are the party of fiscal responsibility, dems are "tax and spend".

It's better to be 'tax and spend' than 'tax-cut and borrow'.

P.S. I had the privilege of hearing JKG lecture, and he was every bit as witty in person and on the fly as his printed quotes suggest.
