Hundreds of farm workers devastated by the recent freeze turned out in Lamont on Saturday to receive food donations. Almost 28,000 farm workers were affected by January's citrus freeze in the San Joaquin Valley. On Saturday the United Farm Workers Foundation let them know help is available and more could be coming soon.
"First of all, we're letting people know it's not... We're not just distributing food today, and that's it, we're gone. This is going to be a long-term struggle for a lot of the families that are providing income for their children, their spouses," said Diana Tellefson, UFW Foundation executive.
Sofia Segoviano works in the fields and said that Saturday's donation is a big help to her and her daughter Mayra, since she has not been able to find work. This is the first food distribution in Kern County on behalf of the UFW Foundation. UFW leaders expect the federal government to step in soon, authorizing special funds for farm workers affected by the freeze. For more information, contact the UFW at 725-9730.
