Has anyone watched the Military Channel on cable? It's a 24/7 wargasm....
Edited on Sun Dec-02-07 09:40 PM by marmar
Nonstop air raids, bombing runs and blowing people to bits, and not in a "War is Hell" kind of way, but in a deferential, celebratory (of U.S. military might) way. I've tuned in quite a few times this weekend to see if the tone ever changed, but sadly it didn't. Sigh.....

It made me think of two quotes by the great Howard Zinn:

“There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people.”

"War itself is the enemy of the human race."

But humankind is unlikely to ever learn these lessons.

1. well, fighting wars is a big part of what militaries do
I've watched their war documentaries before and found them to be very amatuerish. History Channel produces better stuff.

In any event, your complaint speaks to the reason why we need a-la-carte cable plans.

2. You expected a program on growing flowers, maybe?

Although I have to wonder who watches all this stuff.

3. No, but perhaps a more balanced look at war perhaps.

4. It'd be call the War Channel then and might feature films such
as All Quiet on the Western Front or Platoon, occasionally. There have always been people around to glorify the military. They may know all about the weapons, the units and the battles, but they know nothing about war.

15. Same here
We have it, and many other channels we never watch. I wish we could choose our programming ala carte.

6. why don't they call it the "Glory of War" channel
It would be a little more truthful. Everytime I see that this one bald-headed host on one of their shows practically orgasming at the power of another sniper rifle, I get turned off war just a little more. Therapeutic, in a way.

7. Another reason I'm glad I canceled cable
It was bad enough that the History Channel had become the World War II channel, but to have a whole channel that was outright devoted to promoting war was just oo much.

10. The Hitler Channel
At least they have a decent new program called "The Universe."

I had gotten fed up all the UFO/Bigfoot/Nostradamus/Bible prophecy pseudoscience crap, which came after lots of programs on Hitler and the Romans. :boring:

11. I personally enjoy some of those things, in the same way I enjoy d-grade shlock sci-fi movies and
pulp novels.

9. A Warrior Class Society
America has been involved in military actions almost every 20 years since the nation's birth. War has been glamorized as some noble and "just" cause and this mystique has been handed from generation to generation. When there isn't a war, there a period of looking back at past wars (especially the ones you one) and those create the myths of futher glory.

As the child of a WWII vet, I felt a lot of this "glory of war" feeling among my parents generation as that was the centerpiece of their lives. They passed along a all powerful and all good military...or the image of it...that politicians (especially Repugnicans) have been abusing for the past 20 years.

I've glanced past the Military Channel but have no interest in watching. I've gotten tired of the History Channel with their endless war mongering interspersed with religious and tin foil hat conspiracy shows.

13. Does anyone know where I can find the Peace Channel?
I'd like to see a channel devoted 24/7 to ongoing peace operations.

Or am I a dreamer?

... as well as a few others on digital cable, have been real eye-openers for a lot of people, too, I think.

19. I've crossed over that channel... wonder what their target audience is?
I find it unwatchable, especially the "future" features about high tech war, sort of throwing out the "hook" to a young audience, who might exclaim,"Awesome weapons!"

I didn't ask for the military channel, and I doubt they lined this up due to popular demand. You know, our tax money puts this channel on. It has to, then we are charged in the line up (Comcast) so our children can be marketed to.

20. Deleted it from my
personal list of favorite channels. Ditto Fox News and all the sports and shopping channels.

I don't need to dial through them while I'm looking for something I really want to see.

23. There must be something wrong with me.
I never had the interest in "weapons" that many of my male counterparts have at that age. I was much more interested in Martial Arts, a more "noble" type of violence. The only show I watch on the history channel is "Human Weapon", which I recommend to everyone. I can't watch the military channel because it's boring and only about weapons, not the military.
