Curious to know- anyone else seen a "Homeland Security" police car on their streets yet?
Edited on Tue Dec-04-07 01:14 AM by BeHereNow
I was driving on the 101 freeway today, stuck in traffic, as usual in LA,
and just happened to turn my head as a car pulled up next to me in the
lane to my left-
"Homeland Security Police" was written on the side of the car.
The car was painted differently than our usual LAPD cars, but had
the pair of standard red lights on the roof of the car.
The question in my mind though was,
"What's the difference between the LAPD and the
Homeland Security police, and when exactly did they hit the streets?"

Curious indeed.

1. Yes, about six months ago.
I, a retired social worker with several friends in law enforcement, experienced this uncontrollable urge to flip the guy off - fortunately, my kid was there and I controlled myself.

I thought, "What the bleep?"

I'm in Temecula/Murrieta, CA.

9. Do you remember what it looked like?
The one I saw today was basically white, with the
"official" looking words in blue.

20. Thanks for the link- similar to page 8, but not the same title.
I did not actually see a representation of the exact car and logo I saw,
but the cars on page 8 come the closest.

21. That's it! What do they do?
They are a federal version of police?
Why are they here?

We have regular LAPD on patrol and FBI a'plenty,
so who are the new kids on the block?

23. They've been around for a while.
The formation of DHS brought them under their umbrella. They protect all federal buildings, border stations, warehouses, etc. So if you saw them on the 101, it's not that a new police force is out on patrolling the freeways. They were most likely heading from one duty station to another. Usually you just see them parked, or taking a lap around the Federal building.

Check out that sneaky spy periscope. I bet they also have ultra-sensitive listening devices.

I had to take these pictures discreetly because I didn't want some JBTs to storm out and take me away.:scared:

only this was an SUV.

I'm a retired social worker, with friends in law enforcement; so, I asked around. Someone just made a remark in passing (that's it) that the 'officers' in question just sat around yapping with some of the local deputies.

It just plain creeped me out; I haven't seen it since then. I put up a tread at the time telling everyone how much it creeped me out.

Obviously, the LAPD are a California police force-
DHS implies federal police, other than our FBI, on patrol.

29. I think he sarcastically means the cars are wimpy-looking. They should be black,
maybe with something scary on the side to warn Enemies of the State of the "New American Coldness" with which Enemies of the State will be treated.

A couple of parallel lighting stroke, now there's something to strike terror inthe heart of those liberals, hippies, environmentalists, college-students, Constitutionalists, and other Enemies of the BushPutinist State.

36. See post 29...The thing is:
That I can't see any real reason for homeland security squad cars. What are they for, handing out citations and tickets for terrorism related misdemeanors like carrying itsy bitsy bombs or tiny amounts of uranium? Obviously not, so what are they for? Its almost as if they are there for psychological effect. Yet the psychological effect of them just seems kinda ridiculous. Post 29 gives a better idea of how they "should" be. ;)

Why?
What's wrong with the police we already have?
Are we paying extra for them?

13. Could have been US Federal Protective Service
They are a component of DHS responsible for securing Federal Buildings and facilities. I've seen their squad cars and they have the standard "POLICE" written on the car along with a DHS seal.

As far as I'm aware, this is the only law enforcement component of DHS that identifies itself as police.

We were a small group, the organizer submitted two photos, and no one knows who submitted the report. The Homeland Security vehicle stopped at the light in front of us. Someone said the guy inside waved to us. There was another guy there taping the entire time we were there. We were a small group, knew everyone, so this was kind of freaky....None of us would have described the little girl as "bragging".....

38. I saw Homeland Security Police shut down a Union press conference
Edited on Tue Dec-04-07 02:43 PM by Stephanie
It was in lower Manhattan. There were about 20 union folks and ten reporters gathered for a press conf on immigration. The cops came over and said they were on Federal property (it was a city street as far as I knew, but across from the Federal bldg) and they had to apply to the State Dept for a permit for the press conference. I took notes I was so shocked. There were about six Homeland Security Police cars surrounding these union folks.

*edit* I actually found my notes from that day which I emailed to a friend - it was August 30th >

I just walked by this press conference on the sidewalk outside 290 Broadway. It was UniteHere, SEIU, 32BJ - about 20 people speaking and holding signs and maybe 12 reporters and cameras, regarding the SSA No-Match Letters. There were about ten Homeland Security Police cars surrounding them (I didn't know Homeland Security had it's own police!). Then a NYPD cop came over and told the organizers they were not allowed to hold a press conference there without a FEDERAL permit. He siad they were on federal curteledge (sp?) and they had to apply for a permit from the GSA if they wanted to have a press conference there. The organizer said she thought it was a public sidewalk and all they needed was a sound permit. The cop said this sidewalk was on federal property so she needed federal permission to be there. It was across the street from the Javits federal building, on Duane Street btw Bway & Centre.

The event was organized by the New York Immigration Coalition. I thought it was pretty outrageous. Homeland Security shutting down a press conference protesting SSA policy.

39. no- but i have seen a "postal police" squad car...
it was on a snowy saturday night in february, my wife and i were driving south on clark street just south of hollywood ave on the north side of chicago- i saw a squad car coming at us northbound, so i pulled over to let it pass. as it passed- it was a white car with red mars lights on top, and on the side it said simply: Poastal Police, and here it was zooming north at high speed lights and sirens blaring, around 10pm on a saturday night.

i still wonder...why?

i didn't even know there was a "postal police" let alone that they would have actual squad cars...

to combat things like mail fraud (federal crime), or breaking and entering, (federal Crime) for literally decades

If they were responding code 3 you betcha an alarm somewhere at a postal service facility went off

not even the 'hidden' lights, so I suspect it's simply a conveyance. It was also not an 'interceptor' model of car, so I doubt it was going to do any chasing people down either.

The DHS logo was HUGE though. I guess it makes it easier to target?

IN fact they have been around far longer than DHS.

Their mission is to protect all federal buildings and their tennants... And yes they have regular patrol cars and SWAT units, as well as any other component of a police force. Hell, they are the ones running those services in Hawaii for Navy housing, so you could say I have seen then in my street even before DHS was formed
