Oakdale Soldier Dies After Trying to Keep the Peace, Again

The name Matthew Nicholson is one you've probably heard before in news reports around Northern California. He is the soldier from Oakdale who spent nearly two weeks in jail accused of assault after he tried to break up a family fight back in September.

According to "The Modesto Bee," Nicholson died over the weekend after reportedly trying to break up another fight on his base at Fort Campbell, Kentucky on Thursday.

According to the paper, Nicholson's aunt Karen McMenomy said he tried to break up a fight between two groups of men. He was stabbed in the altercation and taken to a hospital. Doctors treated and released him, but he was found dead Saturday. His family is waiting for autopsy results.

This wasn't the first time Nicholson had tried to intervene in a fight. On September 1, Stanislaus County sheriff's deputies arrested Nicholson. That day a 10-year-old boy approached Nicholson and said his father was beating up his mother and grandmother. Nicholson told News10 he followed the boy home and saw Martin Lemas pushing and choking two women.

we have an 18 year old or so female neighbor who beats up on her family quit frequently and the cops tell me I would be wise to call them and let them handle it so I do. another neighbor and I was talking the other day after the last time and he said you know I see that girl going to prison one day and what worries me is who it is she's going to kill to get there.
