Poll question: Do you ever click on the Google ads on here?
I was just wondering about this. I donate during the quarterly fundraisers, but I also click on some ads that interest me because I know it brings revenue in to DU. I also have the adsense ads on *my* sites to help defray the cost of hosting and domain renewals.

I've seen many posters here that talk (brag) about using the firefox ad blocker plugin, yet they don't even have a donor star. Not that there's anything wrong with that, as there is no requirement to be a donor to participate here, but I wonder about people who seem to abhor the thought of having to see ads. What's so bad about the ads that someone wouldn't click on one once in a while to throw a few pennies in the DU coffers? The owners/admins here do a great job in providing us a top notch website to share our views with other likeminded progressives, and I know the bandwidth isn't cheap.

Another reason I ask is to bring up a point about the Google ads. The owner of plentyoffish.com, a free dating site, rakes in about $10,000 per day in adsense revenue. He posted a picture on his site of a check for over $900,000 from Google:

As you can see, the Google ads can be a windfall for a website. If you are unable to donate during the drives, you can still help support the site by clicking on an ad periodically.

1. I don't block them
Because even recording the number of ad views can help the value of the web site and any other future advertising deals. But I don't click on them. The only way I can figure someone makes that kind of money on google ads is by tricking people to click on them. Or maybe people click on sex ads more than the norm.

5. I don't know if there's any trickery going on or not, but I highly doubt it
Google stays on top of click fraud and they'll shut your account down if they even suspect click fraud...

I think about the *only* way to trick someone into clicking an ad would be by using a text link, but I believe even they have the "ads by Google" logo on them.... I'm not too sure about that as I don't use text links, but I know the ad blocks have it...

7. I meant by page placement
That somehow they have them placed so people think they're clicking to another page or somthing. That's just an enormous amount of money to make from google ads, as I imagine you know.

2. Yeah, I click on them every now and then. Funny, but I clicked on the Rational Responder ad
about 10 minutes before that dude started complaining about it.

8. Really?
Why? We could study you as a target audience and then make web sites to appeal to people like you and make ton of money!

6. Thanks for the info.
I have clicked on an ad once or twice, but will click more often since it will bring extra revenue to DU.

Peace:thumbsup:
