hate mail to recovering vets at Walter Reed
has everyone seen the email circling "send a card to a recovering vet at Walter Reed"? nice idea...but was told the post office won't accept them as receiving complaints that hate mail is being sent. WTF? Who are these people? You know liberals are being blamed...received call from my cousin who is Vet hospital administrator..."why are you surprised? They hate us.. they haven't started throwing garbage yet" WHO IS "THEY"?

1. Half a story that is true, half a story that is BULLSHIT.
They don't deliver any soldier/any sailor/any marine/any airman letters anymore. They haven't for YEARS.

It ain't HATE.

It's ANTHRAX.

Typical wingnuts--take a half a dose of truth, and add some rightwing righteous indignation false bullshit. Stir well. Serve.

19. YES, it IS. The only people who can GET 'hate mail' will get it from their "friends"
If you don't know the name and address for the member--as ONLY friends and family will--the mail is not delivered. Anyone getting hate mail at WRAMC is getting it from their crazy mutha relatives, seeking attention and a 'cause' to cry about.

I don't make shit up. Here is a link for the "unbelievers:"

http://www.snopes.com/politics/christmas/soldiercards.asp

Jesus!! :eyes:

Origins: Sometimes a great-sounding idea proves to be far less of a
brainstorm once considered from all angles. That is indeed the case with
the October 2007 open-hearted entreaty to add
"A Recovering American Soldier" to your Christmas card list. While no one
can fault the sentiment behind the suggestion (not only to remember the
less fortunate during the holiday season but to make a special effort to
reach out to those who have been wounded in the service of their country),
the plan falters on one cruel yet central reality — in these times of
heightened security, mail from strangers to unnamed soldiers must for
everyone's safety be discarded unopened.

The U.S. Postal Service will not accept mail addressed to "Any Soldier,"
"Any Wounded Soldier," or the like because if it did, it could be
providing a conduit for those who might do harm to armed services members.
Such offerings are either returned to sender (if a return address has been
provided or if one is found within the package) or donated to charities
(if no address for the sender is found). Similarly, military hospitals
will not accept letters, cards, or packages addressed in such manner for
the same reason. Such beneficences, no matter how kindly meant, are not
permitted to reach the soldiers they were intended for.

Walter Reed Army Medical Center officials echoed this information in a
statement regarding the proposed plan to send cards to unnamed soldiers in
its care:
Mail to Wounded and Recovering Soldiers

Walter Reed Army Medical Center officials want to remind those individuals
who want to show their appreciation through mail to include packages and
letters, addressed to "Any Wounded Soldier" that Walter Reed will not be
accepting these packages in support of the decision by then Deputy
Undersecretary of Defense for Transportation Policy in 2001. This decision
was made to ensure the safety and well being of patients and staff at
medical centers throughout the Department of Defense.

In addition, the U.S. Postal Service is no longer accepting "Any Service
Member" or "Any Wounded Service Member" letters or packages. Mail to "Any
Service Member" that is deposited into a collection box will not be
    delivered.

Instead of sending an "Any Wounded Soldier" letter or package to Walter
Reed, please consider making a donation to one of the more than 300
nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping our troops and their families
listed on the "America Supports You" website, www.americasupportsyou.mil

21. All well and good, but who is keeping Snopes honest?
No one, I say. I've seen more errors on Snopes lately than I have on Wikipedia!

Snopes is still saying that Gore's house is his private house only, and is using a ton of energy based on a dollar amount... instead of noting that his house is also his office, and the dollar figure is higher for the energy because green energy is more expensive.

Bastiges.

26. I am. I was AT WRAMC when that decision was taken. In 2001. Before the WAR.
And there is a direct link to the WRAMC cite downthread.

This is about ANTHRAX. And any soldier who got 'hate mail' got it from a sick 'friend' or an insane relative.

No name, no delivery.

27. That's all well and good...
I'm just saying, Snopes is becoming less and less reliable as a source. We are far better off citing someone else.

29. There is an alternative source for the information downthread. Don't rely on SNOPES if you don't
want to. In this case, all they are doing is quoting WRAMC, who are citing Postal Service and DOD policy dating back to 2001. They aren't 'coming to any conclusions' on their own.

Receiving hate-mail will dissuade people from joining the Army?

14. I was just stating what the public reaction to vets will do to army recruitment
There where no value judgments , just facts.

I have no control over the public or desire to tell them what to do.

17. That vet was the same idiot who claimed he was spit on at the Jan 27 march last year
I blogged about it here.

He claimed he had received hate mail and death threats while he was a patient at Walter Reed.

Then he claimed he was spit on by anti-war marchers.

And he claimed he was refused entry through an airport security checkpoint in his wheelchair.

37. and from what was shown of his "incident" - the spitter would be in Guiness right now
(Book of world Records - spelling may not be right) because anybody passing by him was at least 30 feet away ... and you would figure, will all those RW freepturds running around videoing all the "lefties" so that they could turn them in for treason, if someone spat at the guy, it would be on at least 5 videotapes ...

39. Aha you remember it well
My friend and I were interviewed that day by a NY Times reporter who claimed this vet had been spit on.

He was the one with the megaphone on the side of the march route yelling "SWIM TO CUBA!" And he disrupted a Code Pink rally before the march. They graciously allowed him to come up to the microphone and talk to the crowd.

Then the next night he was on Hannity.

He proposed to his girlfriend on Fox and Friends.

Poor persecuted little veteran.

I still think of the whole incident as the SPIT ON STEROIDS story.

28. It was probably a crazy fundy relative with a crayon.
Someone gave out the guy's name. No name, no letter. ANY SOLDIER mail is not delivered, is not processed by the post office and has not been for the last six years.

For individuals without computer access, your local military installation, the local National Guard or military reserve unit in your area may offer the best alternative to show your support to our returning troops and their families. Walter Reed Army Medical Center will continue to receive process and deliver all mail that is addressed to a specific individual.
