"GEORGE BUSH IS LYING-He has known about this, I am told, for at least one year"-By Larry Johnson
NeoCons Go Ballistic on Iran NIE
By Larry Johnson on December 4, 2007

Johnson has comments from Bolton and Norman Podhoretz
http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2007/12/04/neocons-go-ballistic-on-iran-nie/#more-1132

.................

This blog was one of the first to report that the NIE was being delayed for political reasons. George Bush tried his moron act again today (i.e., “I didn’t find out about this until last week.”) but this time the turd ain’t floating. The news that Iran ended its nuclear program in 2003 was briefed to George Bush in the Presidential Daily Brief. He has known about this, I am told, for at least one year. George Bush is lying when he insists he had no inkling, until last week, that the intelligence community believed Iran halted its nuke program in 2003.

This is the kind of earthshaking intel that analysts rarely get to see. What is remarkable about the NIE is the consensus in the intelligence community about the validity of this info. Compare this to the execrable 2002 NIE on Iraq. There was no consensus in the intelligence community about Iraq’s efforts to acquire nukes. The”true believers” held the day and their position was prominently featured in the final draft. Dissenters–State’s Intelligence and Research Bureau and the Department of Energy–were relegated to footnotes and comments separated from the claim.

When you do an NIE it is incumbent on the writers to clearly state whether there is consensus or dissent. And if there is disagreement then that should be reflected in the text. In the case of the October 2002 abortion, the NIC editors should have noted that there was disagreement in the intelligence community about Iraq’s efforts to rebuild its nuclear program. They should have written something like, “analysts at the CIA and DIA believe Saddam is trying but analysts at INR and DOE believe the evidence points to non-nuclear activity”. Instead, the NIC editors let stand the misleading notion that Iraq was rebuilding a nuclear weapons program even though all agreed that Iraq was not trying to acquire yellowcake uranium from Niger. The senior NIC officials failed to do their duty in 2002.

Not the case today. The NIC stepped up and refused to budge despite repeated efforts by Dick Cheney and his minions to gut the effort. This happened thanks to the convergence of several factors. First, most of the Bush neocon ideologues are gone–Wolfowitz, Feith, Bolton, Wurmser, Libby, etc. Second, the Democrats control the House and Senate Intelligence committee and were receiving reports from analysts about the bullying by Cheney and others who were trying to sandbag the conclusions. Third, senior intelligence officers learned the lesson of 2002 and returned to the tradition of telling the President the truth, no matter how unpopular or unpalatable. And finally, this Administration’s days are numbered and the analysts can read the tea leaves. They know there is no percentage in pandering to power by serving up half-truths and wishful thinking.

Hersh: White House Sat On Iran Intel All Year

The C.I.A. assessment warned the White House that it would be a mistake to conclude that the failure to find a secret nuclear-weapons program in Iran merely meant that the Iranians had done a good job of hiding it. The former senior intelligence official noted that at the height of the Cold War the Soviets were equally skilled at deception and misdirection, yet the American intelligence community was readily able to unravel the details of their long-range-missile and nuclear-weapons programs. But some in the White House, including in Cheney’s office, had made just such an assumption—that “the lack of evidence means they must have it,” the former official said.

4. Time to call out Dana Perino
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/11/26/perino-bush-wouldn%E2%80%99t-lie-to-mcclellan/

Perino: Bush wouldn’t lie to McClellan.

“Today at the off-camera briefing, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said she has discussed Scott McClellan’s forthcoming book with the president, and Perino said President Bush ‘has not and would not knowingly pass false information.’”

13. I hear this
everywhere. What the hell happened behind the scenes that let this NIE see the light of day before the bombing started?
One thought is that the military is refusing to go along with the warmongers this time.
Another is that Joe Biden's warning of impeachment if crazyass bombed Iran.

My theory:

The NIE is obviously opposite what bush and his crones have been telling us. Ok,, says cheney (Bush is too stupid to think of this)let's reveal the NIE report as it is, tout the fact that our pressure on Iran is working but we cannot trust them so let's keep the diplomatic pressure applied. (As if they know what diplomacy is). That way we come off looking pretty good especially if we tell the american morons that we didn't know about this report until, get this, last week!. That will work.

Ok, George, says Cheney, you go to Israel next week and you sit down, see, with them and you guys come up with a date that this "unexpected attack" by Israel will take place. Now, georgie, don't tell anybody what that date is until you get back to me, see?

Then after Iran strikes back at Israel we can say "Jumped up Jesus look what these Islofascists sobs did. They went and attacked Israel (or Syria or whoever) with no provocation at all!" Georgie, let's drop some nukes on 'em boy.

That's my theory.

23. I think it is an open secret that the US can't take on Iran in a conventional war without more lives
lost on every side, military and civilian that the military, the senior insiders at Foggy Bottom who will still be there when Condalizza leaves and in both Houses of Congress that the only way we could actually go to war with Iran without actually destroying Iran ala Dresden and Berlin is with nukes, and we are not going to do that.

The day the carpet bombing of Iran began, the missiles would fly across the Gulf to the Sunni oil states. The EU would denounce the US and I would not be surprised to see NATO try to sanction the US. I have no idea what Russia would do, but given the recent Caspian Sea talks. . . I don't want to find out.

Iran is about 1/4 the size of the contiguous US and has 1/4.5 our population. Not an insignificant obstacle, no "cakewalk" as was Iraq.

38. Unless the military
stand up and disobeys the orders, which I believe they will do given the incidents that have occurred lately . The leaking of the six nukes trip and the bringing to light the NIE report are possibly two examples. I am sure there are more. But unless they stand up and do this, the president of the US is a psychopath that will stop at nothing to further his agenda of world domination.

The thing that has to be watched very closely is his trip to Israel. I believe that he wants to talk to Wohlmert(?) privately to set a date that the "surprise attack" from Israel on Iran will begin. Israel discounted the NIE report about as bad as Bolton did. Bush wants to talk to him privately because you never know who may be listening on the phone, you know.

Once the attack on Iran has begun, the Iranians will no doubt retaliate and little georgie will say, "Oh look what the evil empire did to our friend Israel!! We must defend our friend and we will defend them by bombing Iran back to the stone age.

Or am I completely screwed up?

30. I've heard from a number of reliable sources that US military is "standing down"
on Iran .. .basically telling Bush & The Dick to go fuck themselves... General Fallon, the CENTCOM Commander says "NOT ON MY WATCH" you don't attack Iran.
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/05/16/fallon-carrier/
By the way, this is the same General who called Gen. Betrayus an "ass-kissing little chickenshit".

I have two close friends who are lefties, but happen to know some top brass, and they are saying the same thing. The US military detests these Bushco hooligans.

Some have speculated that the "6 live nukes over America" incident was no "mistake" .. it was a back-door direct command from Cheney's office through their
Patraeus clone/moles embedded within in the military, but that got the kibosh on it when discovered by the real chain of command. But as I said, this is speculation... but it kinda fits.

I look forward to the day when President Kucinich gives some kind of special recognition to these real patiots in the military who have had the guts to stand up to Bush & Cheney.

37. I agree with you 100%
I like Gen Fallon more and more all the time. Makes you wonder if some of the other generals that were fired had told bushco privately that they would disobey an illegal order. They are supposed to disobey illegal orders and maybe they did.

I agree with you on Kucinich also. I believe he is the only one to straighten this mess out.

The shooter is going to be in my hometown tomorrow. I have my signs ready for him. I've heard that we wont be able to get within a quarter mile of where he is speaking. The gestapo flourishes.

Being a child of the 60's .. I've generally demonized the Pentagon/CIA etc. and I never thought I'd seen the day when I'd be
rooting for them to uphold some semblance of a constitution against an insane megalomaniac in the WH ... the closest thing i
guess was the Johnson/Nixon years w/ Viet Nam, but even then, the military pretty much went along with it all .. "interesting

42. You stole my theory! How did you do that?
It must be that our collective unconscious is getting better at predicting the dangers. I think our collective drive to self-preserve is pushing our minds into sharper focus about these dangerous criminals.

They are actually getting easier and easier to predict. Their modus operandi is fairly predictable based on previous patterns.

Here's another prediction... and I'm not the only one who thinks this... and for this I need to put on my tinfoil hat.

:tinfoilhat:

There, that's better.

Bush and Cheney will create a major disaster within the next year and will attribute it to "terrorists". This will serve several functions. It will distract from the creeping financial depression that is wiping out the middle class and which has already decimated the lower classes. Everyday citizens will begin to coalesce in anger towards this administration and towards the super rich who always benefit from our misery. Bush and Cheney will identify the discontented as the new "terrorists" or "suspected terrorists" and will begin to round us up to secure in concentration camps. I suspect we will be put to work in the same type of slave activity seen in prisons today.

I'm also concerned that this administration will declare Martial Law and postpone the elections indefinitely.

These people are capable of anything to maintain power and control.

They are completely insane.

15. We shouldn't if we can prove that he was briefed. However, judging
from the lack of success with previous subpoenas,it's unlikely that Bush would allow any testimony that would contradict his statement.

Please don't misinterpret my comment about "piping down". If there is any hope that our complaints and suggestions could eventually lead to the evidence that we need, we should most definitely continue with the pressure.

17. Joe Biden's comments...
"Are you telling me a president that's briefed every single morning, who's fixated on Iran, is not told back in August that the tentative conclusion of 16 intelligence agencies in the U.S. government said they had abandoned their effort for a nuclear weapon in '03?" Biden asked in a conference call with reporters.

"I refuse to believe that," he added. "If that's true, he has the most incompetent staff in modern American history, and he's one of the most incompetent presidents in modern American history."

My point is that far too much is swept under the table. Only keeping it exposed to the light can bring forth action.

22. So Bush was just lying. This was another war they were pushing based on lies.
These are renegade actions by the president and vice-president to lead us to war. Human life has lost it's importance to these people that they would have so little regard for it in attempting to perpetuate a military attack on another country. Why are they still at the helm of this nation? They are dangerously dysfunctional and are still pushing war rhetoric in spite of the evidence to the contrary. The rest of the world can see clearly how much propaganda our "leaders" have been dumping on us and thanks to our controlled media they continue to do it.
