OK, maybe this is a little bit tin-foily (maybe a lot). Were Bush and Cheney basically lying about Iran in order to reduce Iranian influence in Iraq during the surge? Iran was supposedly reducing their efforts in Iraq the last few months of the surge. Their previous supposed meddling in Iraq was part of a two-pronged Bush admin beef with Iraq. One was the nuclear weapons BS; the other was Iran's supplying weapons to and meddling in Iraq.
So maybe this was a way Bush and Cheney were trying to put their thumbs on the scales of the Surge. Maybe the next question is whether Iran will now increase their efforts in Iraq after Bush's subterfuge has been exposed.
Bush basically handed Iran an ally in Iraq. So he puts pressure on Iran to forestall their growing influence in Iraq, and he does it most forcefully during the "Surge" when that strategy is being judged.
So the Iran nuclear WMD lie could be to help cover up Bush's failure in Iraq and to provide "cover fire" for the Surge. Iran has no reason to go nuclear, and Bush had intelligence indicating they in fact aren't. However, Iran still stands to benefit dramatically from Bush's Iraq disaster, and Bush and his Republican party have every reason to want people to be slow to understand that.
Just a theory.
