Let's say your favorite candidate is elected in November next year. What are the first three things
you hope s/he will do?

I'd post this in GD/P except that I'm hoping for soem intelligent dialog on what issues we find important, not the saintlihood/demonlihood of the candidates. Actually, which Democrat is elected really doewn't matter here at all, just what you'd like them to do.

1. Promote public financing for campaigns, media ownership regulation, and trade policy overhaul
Edited on Fri Dec-07-07 08:21 AM by jpgray
This would help fix all the more obvious symptomatic problems.

7. 1. Stand up and apologize to the world for the last 8 years.
2. Call for federal investigations of the former regime.

3. Announce troop withdrawals from Iraq will begin immediately with total withdrawal in less than 12 months.

2. 0. Repeal Patriot Act.
1. Let NCLB lapse.
2. Roll back tax cuts for the rich.

Even if we don't put Dumbass Dubya and Deadeye Dick in the Hague, doing these three things would be fine by me.

4. Restore dignity to the White House.
Work to outlaw lobbying by corporate interests. Repeal tax free status of religious institutions. These two alone are the heart and soul of corruption in government.

3) Stand up with strength and say "War is no longer an option in solving our problems."

8. 1. Convene a Truth and Reconciliation commission
Acknowledge that the previous Administration committed unprecedented-in-our-lifetime acts of lawlessness and provide shelter to any and all who were harmed by their reign of terror. Get these people on the record to completely demolish any after-the-fact historical whitewashing that will emerge as a cottage industry.

You don't want to make this the top priority, lest it appear to be merely vindictive and a cheap political stunt. But it has to begin immediately, so I'd have that as the very first order of business.

2. Single-payer health insurance coverage for all Americans. I don't care how you have to finagle your way out of your earlier campaign promise, just do it. (Probably the justification would be that your blue ribbon panel will be shocked, shocked, to discover that this is, in fact, the most efficient and effective way to administer healthcare.)

3. A middle eastern diplomatic conference. Get all the players together and ensure that everyone understands that rational people are in charge now. We'll chart a course for security that benefits the world, and not a cadre of thieves.

9. I think an apology to our veterans is an extremely high priority, along with
a commitment to reverse the damage from neglect visited upon soldiers and their families by the Bush administration.

Second, I hope to see a marshalling of resources in New Orleans and the Delta region to offer acknowledgment and rescue for those U.S. citizens who were reeling before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina.

And third, it would be great to see the same administrative commitment to education and health care in this new Democratic administration as Dubya and Dick gave to war.

15. Bill Richardson: "2013 Is Too Late" to get us out of Iraq
www.2013IsTooLate.com
"Bill Richardson is the only major candidate who wants ALL the troops out now and pledges to end the war his first day in office and have ALL the troops out in 2009. 2009 or 2013 – it's our choice."
The first three things Richardson will do:
Get us the fuck out of Iraq.
Increase manyfold our support of veterans.
Restore our standing in the world.
