WOOLSEY STATEMENT ON POTENTIAL IRAQ FUNDING IN END OF THE YEAR FUNDING BILLS

Washington, DC – The co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey today issued the following statement regarding potential Iraq funding in FY ’08 funding legislation:

“The American public put Democrats in power a year ago so that we could stand up to the President on the issue of Iraq, and work to bring our brave men and women home to their families. With the recent passage of H.R. 4156, the Orderly and Responsible Iraq Redeployment Appropriations Act, this Chamber stepped up to that responsibility, and put itself on record in favor of a very clear position - that we would only provide funding for Iraq that would be used to redeploy our troops in a safe and orderly manner. Those of us in this chamber made that promise, and the American public expects us to keep it. That’s why I will not vote for any omnibus bill that veers away from that commitment.”

2. Good for Congresswoman Woolsey! This is not only a matter of life and death,
of right and wrong, of justice and injustice, of moral/ethical behavior and immoral/unethical behavior, but it is also a matter of what is geopolitically best for this nation. We need to extricate ourselves from this huge, unsustainable blunder that the Bush regime has gotten us into and we need to do so with the utmost dispatch. We can debate what the best time-line is, but withdrawing the troops is beyond debate - it must happen and must start now...

3. It is crucial, so why is she the lone voice so far? That's disheartening. nt
