Ice storm pictures - from suburbs of KC
These are some of those tall grass plants in my neighbor's yard. They normally stand straight up.

Tall bush in my front yard leaning into the gutter on the front of my house.

Same set of bushes. They stand about 15 feet normally. Down to about 6 feet today.

Every tree is just covered with ice. It's very pretty. But also pretty scary. There are a lot of downed power lines in this city. In St Joe, about an hour north of KC, nearly 90% of the city is without power.

Another familiar site today all over the city. Looks like my neighbor lost his cable.

1. Stay safe, and warm
We didn't get much down here(SW Missouri), but we got hammered in mid January of this year...I took a lot of pictures of that storm, and many look like the ones you posted.

Snow days are reason enough to go into public education :)

I might go out later. The streets are fine. And there's no traffic. Everyone is too scared to leave home.

7. Not today - the streets are fine
It's been raining off and on all day and that washed the ice off the streets. Not one school district in KC had school today but I think that is more likely due to power outages.

20. Looks like if you get about 1/2 inch more
You will start having the real problems. When the sky looks like a thunderstorm because of the transformers blowing. constant cracking sound from branch's falling, no power to the 90% of the city. We had 10,000 trees downed in the Jan. storm this year. The debree pile was the size of a large college campus and over 30 feet tall before we burned it. We had 3-4 inches of freezing rain in one event. The weight of the ice knocked down power poles, and knock down almost all the steel power poles. Ice storms are the worst type of winter weather.

4. I was born in KC (Kansas) and have early memories of scenes like that
One of my first memories is of getting up early, going to the living room window, and seeing the front yard covered with snow. I must have been two years old, maybe barely three.

I went into my parents' bedroom, shook my mother, and shouted "Snow!"

"Go back to bed," came my father's gruff reply. He had to drive to work in the stuff.

:D

6. Wow, Proud...
It IS really beautiful but must be a bitch to drive in. We're finally getting some snow up here today and everybody's happy. We were 14 inches below our usual total this time of year -- in other words, down to bare grass -- which is weird in Alaska in December.

You guys can keep the ice.

We used to hardly ever get ice. Oklahoma got ice. Arkansas got ice. But we got snow, we were enough farther north. Now we get ice. And I would much rather have snow.

Yes it is a party town but not like it was in the 70s and early 80s.
It tamed considerable before I moved away although I was still involved with the fraternity until moving.

It has become a football town, the Bearcats are playing in their 5th national championship (Div II) this Saturday in Alabama. ESPN2. Watch for me I will be wearing green Ha!

18. That sign is against the law in my suburb
But the dickhead down the street started 6 years ago with a UNITED WE STAND sign. Then he left his BUSH/CHENEY sign up forever after the election and replaced it with some awful sign about TERROR!! Now he has a RON PAUL sign. So I decided to balance the message in this neighborhood. And if the city ever says anything, I will make sure dickhead has to take his signs down too :)

My friend who lives in the suburb next door to mine got taken to court by his city over his yard signs. He got an ACLU attorney, filed suit and won in the state supreme court. So his little suburb had to change their sign ordinance. He also got a bunch of money out of it. So I am really looking forward to my city hassling me about my sign. :)

31. yes I am in Tulsa!
I haven't heard of any TV station that tells the number of dead soldiers every day. But to be perfectly honest, I usually listen to the national news more than the local news.

Still, if they do, it should be listed on one of their websites. Try these.......

Thanks for the good wishes, my phone should be back tomorrow sometime.....

Stay safe and warm!

It's doing something outside, but I'm hoping it's just rain. I'm sticking around work late since we have our county Dems holiday party just up the road from my office tonight. I think the roads are just wet, so getting there won't be a problem, but going home later could be dicey. Hopefully they've salted enough that it won't all freeze up.

They don't even plow the streets in KCMO. They do in the suburbs but not in the city. Only the main streets but the residential ones are a mess. Poor evlbstrd gets snowed in. Oh well, that's what he gets from living in the city. :)

28. Oh those are beautiful Proud
But after living in NY all my life I know what ice can do, even though it is so beautiful.

Believe it or not, I just finished washing my car. It was 85 degrees here in Florida. Very unusual for this time of year. Last week it was in the low 30's and this week in the 80's. Just cracked open a beer for my labor.

I am really thinking I need more of the four season, than what Florida has to offer.

Love the sign.

Take care and please be careful.

I don't love winter, but these temperatures in North Florida have been crazy.

I had to go to Chicago right before Thanksgiving for work and I packed all my sweaters and such. Well the lowest temp they had while I was there was 45. I was so looking for a good chill. Didn't even need a coat. They kept saying that it was unseasonably warm. No shit it was.

Hey, aren't we due for a reunion of sorts? I would love to see you guys again. Need a good dose of Liberalism to get me through another year of this crap.

There are a bunch of actions being planned by the anti-war activists. That is also the same week as Take Back America. If I can get a room at the Harrington, I will stay there again. If not there is a Hilton nearby where I will try to reserve a room.

41. Hi, Sharon
:hi:

This has been a very busy year, workwise.

I pop in now and again, but it seemed that everytime I did, there would be some sort of flame war in full eruption.

I would love for all of us to get together again in DC. I don't know how I am going to make another year of this crap, especially without our candidate in the running.

How have you been?

I'd love to see you in DC again -- missed you at the march in September. We didn't have a great DU turnout, but those of us there did have a great time.

I'm seriously considering coming to DC for Take Back America in March.

I've been busy starting work on Nancy Skinner's campaign -- she announced in October -- so I've backed off of the Gore movement. We've got a tough primary fight on our hands this time out.

42. Glad to hear that you're doing alright
Here in Callaway County, it's like a tornado went through. Right now I'm sweating out a limb that's hung up on a power line. So far, so good, but I don't know how long before the electric company gets here to get it off. My orchard took a small hit, nothing that it can't recover from. However some of the bigger trees on the farm, oaks, poplars, etc. have all lost some major limbs. I've got plenty of chainsaw work to do once the ice melts. Thank goodness I'm on break right now.

We've gotten over an inch of ice on everything, and there are towns nearby that are dead. Holt Summit lost all electric, and Jeff City lost a lot. Fulton looks like a tornado ripped through. Apparently the worst part of the storm came over Cole and Callaway counties, and I was on the northern edge of it. I haven't lost power(yet) but there have been some major flickers over the past few days, and I've lost my ISP server for awhile, along with the local radio station.

Glad to hear you're alright though. It's supposed to slowly warm up and thaw out, with the sun coming out tomorrow or Friday. I couldn't be any happier, I'm tired of this.

Take care of yourself, and watch out for falling limbs. I've have a couple try and take me out.
