Oprah getting backlash from some fans for Obama support
Oprah getting backlash from some fans for Obama support

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Oprah Winfrey's recent campaign swing with Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama was greeted with wild cheers and record-breaking crowds.

But some of the talk show host's fans aren't happy she's become politically outspoken, and many are sounding off on Oprah's Web site.

"Oprah," says one, "count me as tuned out for now." Another writes, "It's a real turn off for a lot of your fans." And yet another says "She has crossed a line and lost my trust completely."

But, what's especially interesting about reading Oprah's Web site is why some of those fans seem to be upset: the way she stumped for Obama, they say, seemed to pit white against black.

1. Oh, QQ some of her Republican fans are upset.
I hardly doubt they will have any impact on her viewership, if anything I am betting she will have more viewers now than ever before.

Socialism and Universal Single-payer Health Care. I wonder if her thoughts on these two subjects had anything to do with her selection of Obama?

She does a lot of good in this world. And she can support anyone she pleases. He's not my choice, and I don't like the way things were portrayed at the rally, but I support her in what she's doing.

23. I don't begrudge her those things
(Of course, I don't start topics being critical of her, either.) But...... She surrounds herself with people who revere her in a way that is disturbing. I listen to some shows on Oprah and Friends on XM radio when driving in my car because some of them are educational. But, too often, you have to wade through Marianne Williamson's Bullshit about Oprah being our Earth Mother Goddess. Or Jean Chatzky kissing her ass. They shill books and products always saying how much Oprah loves it, which is disturbing. Almost like recommending something on its own merit isn't enough.

58. "pretend ghetto speak" ? You mean the dialect of English she grew up speaking?
1.) The dialect is not the product of The Ghetto.
2.) She is not the only broadcaster to adopt the kind of generic standard American accent/dialect for television. That is the "pretend accent" as you put it.

25. Oprah's comment regarding MLK 's Dream,etc. was
a divider not a uniter comment. Barak's campaign should be more about the class war that's going on. Using the race card was very stupid IMHO. Calling for African Americans to Choose Black over White is in it self racist. There are many before me who marched with them, many ran the underground railroad and many today still condemn racism and want equal rights for ALL. It's the rich against the poor now and we all need each other. Do not mistake this as I just think African Americans should get over the horrors that were done to their ancestors and still trickle down to this very day. I do NOT! But who is to say that a white president would not be more helpful to the plight of African Americans than Obama. Sure she has the right to support whom ever she chooses but her blatant insult and racism against whites did not go un-noticed by many. If he does get the Dem nod, the repugs will not let go of the bone she threw them with her words and he will pay the price for allowing her comment to go unchallenged. Just sayin'

randi ended up doing an entire fucking show on this business w/oprah. her point was that oprah always says to be authentic and that stump speech she gave was not the way oprah talks, and therefore randi thought it was strange that oprah was basically being inauthentic

and the callers on her show! black people arguing that oprah was being authentic. some saying they speak differently at home & with friends than they do in the workplace. if you followed their argument then oprah's professionalism is just an act and she really is not articulate when she is at home or in her private life.

randi argued that she was. and that the dialect she used at the speech was a calculated move, done on purpose--not because she was "being herself"

randi said how can people say hillary was pandering to a black audience when she started using twinges of black dialect, and oprah wasn't. (and the fact that there were mostly white people in the crowd--so it's not like she was trying to reach out to all the black people there because apparently the majority was white--iowa)

back & forth & back & forth! for three hours! i think it was last tuesday's show

as an aside:
a friend of mine helped to run a nightclub in chicago back in the '80s and had the occasion to meet/deal w/oprah. he had several negative things to say about her (she was a snob, she was bitchy, she was demanding) but he never told me "you know, she sounds nothing like she does on tv"

Oprah speaks to you in your language when she does her TV show. She speaks to the people of her own culture in their language when she talks to them. Apparently, a lot of black Americans do something similar. What's the matter -- that's not okay with you?

Seriously: just what the hell do you want? Should Oprah appease you by forswearing any contact with anything you might deem "too black"? What for?

If black language doesn't seem "articulate" to you, that's because you don't speak it. The English always hurled all the same slurs at people who spoke Scots. The question of why it was ever any of their business how the Scots spoke amongst themselves never occurred to them. Apparently, it hasn't occurred to that shrill boozer, Randi Rhodes, either. Too bad.

i was telling you what i heard on the show. sorry for even giving you that much.

and btw--in case you haven't heard--black people speak the same language as whites. i believe it's called english.

i never gave you my opinion on this matter. my only opinion was that three hours were spent on this "hot topic" with angry callers and randi not moving on to any other topic. she was arguing, callers were arguing.

60. I can speak that way too, it doesn't make me bilingual.
I can do a good Brit accent too, complete with appropriate slang and all, but that isn't speaking another language. It's just a different way of using the common words of a specific language. I don't know if Oprah was trying to appear "blacker" than she really is or not and, really, I don't care. But I do know she was speaking English.

I dont care about her anymore after Katrina, yes, she went on TV right away, but the powers that be took her off TV, and after that she LOST my respect because she did not fight back, she said she would be on TV from New Orleans, and then after 2 shows she caved in...... .
I watched her Xmas special----- have to be rich to afford that stuff she was giving out and the crowd was screaming out...
I dont think her backing Obama will make any difference.
