Baghdad, Dec 17, (VOI)- At least 48 persons were killed and 45 others, including policemen, were injured, while Iraqi forces detained 30 people and found unknown body in acts of violence in different areas of Iraq over a period of 24 hours until Monday afternoon, security sources said.

A police source said that one civilian was killed and five other wounded when an improvised explosive device went off near a popular restaurant in Falastine street, northeastern Baghdad, on Monday, while four Iraqi army soldiers and three civilians were wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED) attack on a security patrol in the southern Baghdad district of al-Zaafaraniya on Monday.

The U.S. army said on Monday that a U.S. serviceman died in a non-combat related incident in northern Baghdad.
The death brings the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to 3,894 as officially reported by the U.S. army.

the sad part is, if violence goes up even slightly, the RWers will have a fit and blame it all on Defeat-o-crats and the fact that some troops went home.

5. Newsweek has a report covering how the lower number in bodies
might just be a case of the militias burying the bodies rather than dumping them on the streets:
