Barbara Walters critiques White House Christmas card
Edited on Tue Dec-18-07 04:35 PM by Bluebear
Washington DC, Dec 17, 2007 / 12:02 pm (CNA).- The White House has sent out its annual Christmas card, featuring a seven-line excerpt from the Bible.

The card quotes from the Old Testament Book of Nehemiah 9:6, which in the New International Version of the Bible reads:

You alone are the LORD.
You made the heavens, even the highest heavens,
and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it,
the seas and all that is in them.
You give life to everything,
and the multitudes of heaven worship you.

The card closes: “May the joy of all creation fill your heart this blessed season 2007.” The Christmas card, signed by both George and Laura Bush, was paid for by the Republican National Committee.

The card raised a few eyebrows among media personalities. Barbara Walters, host of the ABC talk show The View, wondered on the show why the card was so religious and how it would be received by non-Christians. She asked "Don't you think it's a little interesting that the president of all the people is sending out a religious Christmas card?"

Ms. Walters clarified her intention later in the show: "By the way, I don't want to put down the President of the United States and his wife. I think it's very nice that they sent me a Christmas card."

10. Just sounds like Bush is worshipping himself to me
Why use such an obscure verse, that talks of how "you alone" are "everything?" Project much, Mr. Bush...?

20. It is from the old testament, you know the part of the bible that
sanctions killing and incest.

Genesis 19: 30-38

30And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

31And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:

32Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

33And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

34And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

35And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

36Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

37And the first born bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.

38And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

Numbers 31:17

17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man

Yep, keep the virgins for yourself.

11. Is she serious, "how it would be received by non-Christians"?

A quotation from the Old Testament that makes no reference to Christ or any prophecy of Christ. Did she mean non-religious or is she really that ignorant?

13. No, she really is.
Nothing of any intelligence whatsoever has come out of her mouth in a long time. No bloody wonder she's on Bush's card list!

"Don't you think it's a little interesting that the president of all the people is sending out a religious Christmas card?"

No. I'm used to him assuming everybody wants his religion crammed down their throats.

17. Interesting. Maybe they used that quote BECAUSE the card will be going out to "movers and shakers"
like Barbara Walters, various other celebrities, potentetates, and all the wannabe-potentates in DC and elsewhere: the recipients will think the quote is about themselves! Kind of a "you da man/you go girl" message. (I'm sure if Oprah got one, she'd KNOW it's about her.)

19. The prez seal above the excerpt makes it seem as though "You alone are the LORD"
refers to W.

I wouldn't like it, but a cross above that excerpt would have been more appropriate. The seal could follow below or on the back.

Yuck.

22. Yeah, particularly as it has nothing to do with Christmas/JC/New Testament.

It's a moronic and irrelevant choice of verse; hence, it is more insulting to Christians than pandering to them.
