You, for trying to use approval of the Democratic Party as a wedge issue, or the gadflies who would consider this a wedge issue.

5. I detest the Republican party.
Edited on Tue Dec-18-07 05:59 PM by smoogatz
The Democratic party is much, much better, though it's a hell of a long way from being perfect, or even reasonably good. In fact, it's a big, clumsy, ramshackle machine made up of a dozen-odd constituencies, many of which are in conflict with each other on central issues. But it still occasionally bears a resemblance to the party of FDR and Jack Kennedy, still occasionally shows a glimmer of conscience and concern for the rule of law, the common good and the plight of "the little guy." Because the Republican party is so utterly morally bankrupt, so entirely the property of corporate money, so happy to sell its soul to fascists, theocrats, racists and homophobes, and because the Democratic party is, for all its failures (many of which are abject, especially lately), the only game in town, I do, sort of, once in a while, not despise the Democratic party (it's also got a few guys like Russ Feingold in it, who actually give a shit about doing the right thing). But I also hate the venal, craven cluelessness of many of its "leaders," who are complicit in every single disaster in which we now find ourselves enmeshed. Love it, hate it, work to make it better.

6. It's interesting to ponder about what if there were a special interest
group intent on ruining the Democratic party. What would be their reason? What if they were also intent on ruining the Republican party (of course they wouldn't have a whole lot of work to do there.) One way to do so if such a fantastical interest group did exist would be to propagate the meme that there is no difference between the two parties. It would be wildly successful since ALL propaganda contains an element of truth or fact. That way, well intentioned citizenry could be brought into the fold without even knowing the ultimate goal.

Couldn't be of course. Just fun pondering stuff like that.

10. I love what Thomas Jefferson said about party loyalty.
"I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever, in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else, where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. If I could not go to heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all." --Thomas Jefferson to Francis Hopkinson, 1789.

"Were parties here divided merely by a greediness for office,...to take a part with either would be unworthy of a reasonable or moral man." --Thomas Jefferson to William Branch Giles, 1795.

14. I like what the democratic party used to be.
The democratic party used to stand up for the ideals and the philosophy that created and fed the democratic party.

This abomination that is called the democratic party today in no way resembles the traditional democratic ideals. Look at the people in "leadership" positions. Reid, Pelosi, Schumer, etc. These people do not hold traditional democratic values at all. They are corporate shills just like the republicans. Look at most of the presidential candidates. They will not even vow to remove troops from Iraq and they will not vow to NOT stay in Iraq permanently. They will not bring an end to the war and they will not ban lobbiests.

Tell me that these people represent the democratic party. That is why I renounced my democratic status and now claim to be an independent. More accurately, I would call myself a progressive.

You can have the old democratic party. I don't want it.

more accurately, I would call myself a progressive. It's hard to cast a primary vote as a progressive. Not that many candidates.

It is obvious to me that you are at peace with the current democratic platforms and policies. That is fine. That is why this used to be a democracy.
It is a democracy no more and those that want to see it restored are demanding change and accountability from our representatives.
Just sayin....

Join your local club, get elected to the central committe, take part. Write some legislation, find a candidate, work to get her/him in office and pay attention to what they do. THe reason the party was taken over by "those people" is that you didn't get involved.

78. I get major junk from people for claiming that people here don't get involved.
And yet, I really don't see it happening. In the Chicago area we have this organization named Illinois Dem Net, and we would invite speakers from organizations like People for the American Way to speak at meetups in bars. Issue groups like that seem to always have something they want to do and need people to do them, or even just money to do them. If there is lukewarm support for a particular initiative, I think people here should try to push that issue and get more people to support it, and then the politicians could win with them. Take abortion for example: a very controversial issue, but the Democrats generally won't compromise on it because the support for it is so big, and the organizations to support it and gain public consensus on it are so well-established. If people would join a group to make the case for whatever health care issue or whatever else they'd want to see, they might get that much power. But instead they tear down the infrastructure that's just trying to stop the Republican encroachment at the moment.

83. what do you do IN the party?
that is where it's all happening. We can come together in every bar on the planet (and have a great time while we are at it) but you county central committee is where you get the juice. THis is MHO.

Become a delegate to your state party. Join caucus' That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about.

Because there is a real dearth of people who want to get involved, there are many slots open in the central committees. In our county (very liberal northern California) there are 8 or 10 openings on the committee. Because of that, you have real opportunities to get your ideas incorporated. There should be a phone number for the local party.

I hope I don't sound all preachy about this. I have been an activist all my life and have done various things. But 2 years ago, I joined the club...became the club secretary (no one else would do it) helped to organize some events. Then when someone else didn't go to the convention, I became a proxy delegate and went to the state convention. Then I elected to the central committee (no one else applied and there are still 3 seats open in my assembly district). Now, I'm really into LED lighting, so I wrote a resolution, got it passed locally and then the state passed it. Legislation is being worked on and I hope to have my first bill signed by the gov in the next year. So I say, get involved. If I can do this, anyone can. If we all do this, we can change our world.

BTW a big shout out to my wonderful mentor who has guided me through my whole experience. :patriot: Go Gigi!

I would encourage people to go that route in addition. Cook County*, Illinois, where I am, works a little bit different, though ;). But there still are a lot of places, like you say, where there isn't already a well-oiled Democratic machine, and even here there is Illinois Dem Net (the link is in my signature for everyone interested - even out of the state, the web site is a good example of how to run a clearinghouse of things to do).

55. I don't believe there is a UFO party
Are you talking about MUFON? I mean they really aren't terribly politically involved at all. Is this a directed comment at some party I have never heard of? Or are there some democrats that you are targeting with it?

Is it directed at Congressman Kucinich? I mean he is actually a real Democrat so I have to assume it isn't. Is it directed at Ralph Nader? The only reason I ask is your silly "F$@# Nader." I mean between bashing Nader outside of the party and going after Kucinich within the party do you honestly think you are going to win over a lot of lefties?

If you are the sort that believes that "Nader cost Gore the election" (something I do not entirely agree with) then wouldn't it be logical to try to appeal to these voters in some manner? I mean if you had to choose between trying to draw more moderate republicans with promises of slightly increased church involvement in the affairs of state, more "fiscally conservative" (see also: slash infrastructure, education, welfare programs for children in poverty) policy OR trying to draw in and energize progressive voters which would you choose?

If you would choose to try to bring in the repukes rather than trying to inform the public how progressive values are good for them and activating our own base, A base that the 'Nader stole...' argues is an entitlement exclusive to the Democratic party, then I really think you should rename your thread.

as a way to attack anyone who disagrees with the actions of THEIR tin gods.

If someone says 'Pelosi sucks' or 'Reid sucks', they are accused of saying 'Dems suck' even though the initial statement was made because the sucker was NOT acting like a Dem.

47. So do I - as only someone trapped in the REDDEST state can...
here in darkest Mississippi, it's almost as exotic to be a Democrat as to be an Episcopalian. :hi: :kick: :loveya: :grouphug: :patriot:

54. Let's See...
Response One: I'm way too (cool/counterculture/pure of heart) to like a political party...or anything that exists in the real world.

Response Two: I like (some tiny fragment/special interest group) of the Democratic Party, but I hate everyone else.

Response Three: We must stick together as a party even when the party is doing a shitty job.

Response Four: You're criticizing my favorite candidate! Fuck You!

Apply the Big Four template to the previous posts! Have Fun!

My actual answer: I like the Democratic Party because it's the closest thing to a party that I can agree with most of the time. Why can't you like something and still be critical of it? The party is sort of like a relative: Annoys the hell out of me, but I'm not going anywhere.

66. I dont love the Democratic Party, but I just *HATE* the GOP.

Frankly the democrats never cease to disappoint me. Whilst I agree with them on most issues their lack of spine (especially in Congress) wants to make me strangle them through the TV. What happened to Impeachment? what happened to curb spending? what about putting an end to the Bush War machine?

No F**k'in backbone. Everytime they have stood up to Bush, they have caved. Too afraid of what the GOP might think. Fuck them, if they cannot take on a deeply unpopular president, Nobody respects a coward.

The Dems response: "wait to we have a Democratic President!". Well judging the Dems recent panache for losing easy elections, that might be a long wait. There is no-way Bush should have been elected or reelected. When I first saw what a IDIOT he was I couldn't believe the GOP would serious consider picking him -then I remember Dan Quayle. Gore and Kerry ought to have crushed him. We can make excuses but 2000 should have not as been as close as it was. It ought to have been a Democratic landslide. And 'Yes' the GOP cheated, and played dirty but those tactics only work if its close, it shouldn't have been close.

Don't get me wrong, I will vote Democrat anyway (Edwards). But I cannot say that with any pep.

I just really HATE the GOP and everything they stand for.

69. Not me, and people like you are the reason why.
You hide behind shit like this while actually tearing down Democrats like DK just because people like that don't fellate you properly. You don't give a shit about the party and differing opinions and ideas. You want a party of cowards and sycophants, just like the Repubs that you claim to hate, all the while acting just like them and doing their work for them. People like you are destroying the Party, not helping it.

There's only like an hour and a half left, and the one in thiard place right now was posted later than this one, so it's unlikely to drop out by itself. But I think everyone who got us to foarth!
