In Kids Who Kill, Huckabee argued that school shootings were the product of a society in decline, a decline marked (and caused) by abortion, pornography, media violence, out-of-wedlock sex, divorce, drug use, and, of course, homosexuality. Huckabee and his coauthor bemoaned the "demoralization of America," observing, "Despite all our prosperity, pomp, and power, the vaunted American experiment in liberty seems to be disintegrating before our very eyes." Huckabee, who was governor at the time and a well-known social conservative, blasted away at those whom he held responsible for America's ills, and he took a rather tough stand against government social programs and their advocates. In lamenting the "cultural conflicts" besetting the country, he wrote,


"Abortion, environmentalism, AIDS, pornography, drug abuse, and homosexual activism have fragmented and polarized our communities."

Why was he lumping environmentalism with activities he considered sinful? He did not explain further. A few pages later, Huckabee complained,


"It is now difficult to keep track of the vast array of publicly endorsed and institutionally supported aberrations—from homosexuality and pedophilia to sadomasochism and necrophilia."

If someone's gay, they should just go with it, not try to deny and make out like they're Mr. Morality who hates "gay homosexuals". The sick part's the self loathing, IMO.

politicians/preachers recently who have turned out to at least be engaging in closeted same gender sex, whether they are actually gay is another question of course. Larry Craig and Ted Haggard are only two recent examples. It does seem that some of the most outspoken gay bashers are often the ones who turn out to be unsure of their own sexuality. I do wonder about Huckabee based on some of these really wacko gay phobic statements just as I wonder about Fred Phelps.

For one thing, it is not usually possible to hide one's racial identity. But the self loathing aspect does have some parallels - blacks have been known to discriminate against darker skinned blacks, for example. And a better analogy would be to really look at who the white racists were/are. Not always, but often they were the ones closest to blacks in terms of social class. It was often the poor whites who were most racist and foot soldiers for the Klan. And hence they targeted "uppity" blacks - blacks who dared to think themselves better than the poor whites.

And it does appear that over the years some of the most rabid gay phobes have turned out to be practicing closeted same gender sex. Racial bigotry comparisons aside, how do you explain that? Or do you deny that it is happening?

I'm just not one to jump on the self-loathing bandwagon. It's so easy for heterosexuals to make the LGBT community into a cheap punchline. It isn't funny. We aren't laughing.

Straights who are secure in their sexuality tend not to be into gay bashing and they are often more open to accepting GBLTs once they have gotten past the ignorance. I don't see how saying that is somehow a negative against the GBLT community. If anything it is an indictment of the straight community. After all it is the straight community that oppressed the GBLTs in the first place and created the environment which kept people in the closet.

I do however think that ridicule can be used fairly effectively against gay phobia whenever it rears its head. Ridicule should not be confused with laughter and it can be a great teacher - particularly to the bystanders.

And I can't begin to tell you how many times I've been called a faggot. Thankfully, only a few times I've been attacked for being gay in the City, and since I travel for work, I've also been called a faggot, but not as many times as when it came from the place I lived.

why people exhibit bigotry - I do think low self esteem plays a big role and sometimes that low self esteem comes from living a closeted life style. People who repress their basic nature have a hard time behaving "normally". And it is not just "closeted" people, a bigger part of it may be heterosexuals who are some distance away away from the straight end of the straight-gay continuum and they don't quite know how to deal with those feelings - so it comes out as gay bashing.

Where I disagree is the presence of some pseudo-same-sex attraction motivating the gay bashing. It may be present in a few, but there's nothing to prove that the majority of those who engage in anti-gay behavior are actual closeted homosexuals.

differs a lot. As for the civil rights aspect, there are many similarities.

Racial identity doesn't have the equivalent of the sex drive or the sexual relationship bonds that go along with it. I think that therefore sexual identity is much more complex and hence not as well understood as racial/ethnic identity.
