I never noticed this building next to the White House

It looks like this building could be in England somewhere. I don't know, it just has that look. I guess I don't pay attention to what is surrounding the White House.

Better save those pics of Bush and Cheney with the firefighters in Yahoo. They could become evidence.

3. Isn't that the building that Jackie Kennedy saved?
I thought they were going to tear it down at one point, or something like that and Jackie Kennedy came to its rescue. Anyone remember?

6. Yes, Eisenhower had recommended that it be torn down..
Jackie Kennedy was a major force behind saving it, along with the Decatur House. I wish she could have saved more.

4. They used to call it The Old War Department Building..
years ago. Some people think it's an ugly monstrosity and others think it's beautiful. It was apparently built in a very short-lived popular style of the Victorian Age. It's one of the more unique buildings in the city, that's for sure.

10. There's a great hot dog cart just across street on the corner.
Sometimes when I'd come in to work on Saturdays I'd walk over, grab one sit down in Lafayette Park.

11. It's rather odd. This monolith is exactly next to the White House.

If you walk 1600 Penn Ave you walk right passed it. Your perception is true. The first time I was in DC it was one of the things that was a surprise to me. The building id referred to in the media but when you see White House photos or video it is cropped out.

13. I think it's a beautiful building. Here's a picture of the entire facade.

This is the main entrance on the south side of the building facing Pennsylvania Avenue.
