Just What Is 21st Century Socialism?? (Venezuela)
http://www.venezuelanalysis.com/articles.php?artno=1940

As a result of President Chávez's resounding triumph in the recent election, many people have become seriously interested in the proposal he made in his speech of Feb. 25, 2005, at the inauguration of the Fourth Summit of Social Indebtedness.

In it, Chávez expressed his belief that the revolution should be socialist, otherwise it would not be a revolution. Later, when discussing that speech, he explained that it should be a 21st-Century type of socialism, giving a name to a new concept. But exactly what is 21st-Century socialism?

----------
This is a pretty good article. A friend of mine was invited by the Communist Party of Venezuela to come and witness the last elections. The Communist Party of Venezuela was actually formed by members of the Communist Party USA. They are one of 20 parties that supported Chavez in the last elections. Chavez has proposed a unified socialist party and the CPV is still debating whether they would be better served in a unified party or all seperate. I believe Chavez is taking the popular or proven ideas from many different groups-communists (marxists), social democrats, socialists, unions, Christian liberation theologists, agrarian movements, and even progressive capitalist parties, construction companies for example, have made lots of money during his government.

1. 21st-Century socialism: help the people first THEN pay the bankers.
This is what America needs, but in America the government and bankers are the new Gestapo. They don't care if you're hungry and homeless, they'll take your blood.

2. I don't understand why we can't have a five year plan
type project here to save the environment. The government could leave everything in private hands but make goals and priorities for the next few years. Roll back taxes on oil companies and tax their profits, use the taxes to fund alternative energy (Pelosi already enacting this), outlaw outdated technology like energy inefficient light bulbs, order companies like Dow Chemical to clean up the messes they have made or face court, force automobile industry to make cars with better gas mileage and tax the hell out of gas guzzlers while giving tax breaks to hybrids ect, update government buildings with things like solar panels, and invest in wind and hydroelectric power. Seems like a good compromise that most sane people could support. socialist objectives enforced through a market economy for the good of the country.
