Pool safety bill signed by President Bush

Washington D.C. — (AP) - President Bush signed legislation Wednesday aimed at strengthening pool safety, six months after a 6-year-old girl had part of her intestinal tract torn out by a drain's powerful suction at a wading pool.

The legislation would ban the manufacture, sale or distribution of drain covers that don't meet anti-entrapment safety standards.

The House approved it as part of an energy bill, following Senate passage last week, and President Bush signed the bill Wednesday morning.

The legislation, the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act, is named for another victim, the 7-year-old granddaughter of former Secretary of State James Baker. She drowned at a graduation party in 2002, when the suction from a drain pinned her.

The girl's mother, Nancy Baker, said she was "ecstatic" about the bill's passage.

Ths shame is it took this long to get this bill passed. It took the teamwork of both senators from Minnesota and a Democratic congress. James Baker with all his pull in the Repuke party could not get a Repuke congress to pass it. And this should've been law years ago especially after John Edwards won a huge judgement for his client Valerie Lakey against the same pool drain manufacturer who caused 6 year old Abigail Taylor her internal organs. This is the child who just this week has undergone a triple organ transplant in Nebraska. She's worried that Santa Claus won't be able to find her in the ICU in the hospital so far from her home.

Oh and a big thank you to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla who got this bill through the House!

She's been a real disappointment, one of the Democrats who reliably caves in on stuff like FISA. But this is a good bill, so I guess we can thank her for something.
