Poll question: DU Poll Food for Thought--Question #3 (of 3)
Did your giving reflect your priorities?

If you haven't answered question #1, you can find it here.
If you haven't answered question #2, you can find it here.

Before you answer the poll question in the subject line, please ask yourself these questions:

Am I relying on voting rights/election integrity groups to make sure the election is accurate?

Do I appreciate the work of the (mostly unpaid) advocates who exposed the theft of the 2004 presidential election, have turned the tide against electronic voting, and are working to bring democracy to the United States?

Who could make better use of my contribution, a large national political campaign with a budget in the millions or a people's organization with an annual budget in the thousands?

And please see the list of voting rights/election integrity groups in response #1 to this poll!

1. Please consider end-of-year donations to one or more of these fine organizations
Edited on Thu Dec-27-07 08:14 PM by emlev
Please consider end-of-year donations to one or more of these fine organizations (listed in alphabetical order), or to another voting rights/election integrity group of your choice:

Election Defense Alliance
Color of Change
Free Press
Progressive Democrats of America
Psephos
Velvet Revolution
Voter Action
Voters Unite
Liberty Tree Foundation for the Democratic Revolution

Note: Many of the organizations that worked to protect the 2006 elections have not yet launched their plans for 2008. Velvet Revolution's soon-to-launch election 2008 website will include up-to-date listings of groups by state.
There are also many local and statewide groups doing great work. If you know of one, post a link to it below. If you want help finding one, PM me.

Edited for link repair.

18. This list leaves out a LOT of really worthy orgs
There are good names on this list, but there are SO many others.

You can also go to verifiedvoting.org and look up who is working in your state and not only donate, but JOIN their efforts. If there's not a group working in your county, talk to the other groups in your state and START ONE!

p.s. I totally agree that the heavy lifting on election integrity is being done--by and large-- by small groups, and they are so worthy of our support.

24. I agree and invite you to link to more orgs
I left out the national well-funded organizations that do some good work on election protection but have also, IMHO, fallen quite short of the in-depth understanding of the issue that would lead them to take the most helpful positions on some of the dicier issues.

I also left out some organizations that have been very active in recent elections that I wasn't sure are going to be gearing up for 2008, and organizations whose work is limited to a particular state or local area.

Again, I invite folks to recommend more organizations. Let's get them some donations. And please help kick the first question of this poll kicked so more folks will see it! The link to it is in the OP of this thread.

2. Other:
I donated generously to my primary candidate AND to organizations and individuals working for paper ballots in '03 and '04.

I don't have anything left to donate in '07. A paycut and a massive influx of health-related expenses leaves me scraping for gas money to get to work each week. I've given a very small amount this fall to a candidate, because I believe in his work.

That candidate also works for voting rights and election integrity; he authored and introduced H.R. 6200, "The Paper Ballot Act of 2006" last year.

9. I'm supporting Edwards. What good is supporting the
voters' rights and vote protection groups if you don't have fundamental change in D.C.? We need fundamental change that permits us to protect our voting rights. Without the fundamental change, without a fight against the corruption caused by the out of balance corporate lobbyist influence in D.C., all our other efforts are in vain. I believe that Edwards will handle this issue as one of a number of basic issues that need to be attacked in a comprehensive effort.

11. Conversely,
I feel exactly the same as you, only the opposite. I don't see how it makes sense to invest time and energy into a campaign for an election that will be counted in secret without any way to be certain of the true outcome. I don't really want to debate that with you but I wonder if you could post some stuff about Edwards on secret vote counting vs. hand counting?

13. That's why I included volunteering in the questions...
There are lots of ways to give, including by giving emotional or practical support to the volunteers working tirelessly/tiredly to secure our democracy.

Or by spreading the word to anyone you know who has the ability to give time or money.

Thanks!

Total campaign spending for the 2004 elections, just for the top of the ticket -- presidential and Congressional -- reached almost $4 billion. A reasonable guess would be that 2008 will easily surpass that.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the election integrity groups have not hauled in that kind of dough. In fact, I'd bet big bucks on that, because I know some of the election integrity people, and how they scramble just for the basics, whether it's travel money to attend hearings, equipment, printing, website maintenance, or just keeping a roof over their heads because they're so busy doing the election work that so desperately needs doing.

Just as women in the US owe their right to vote to tireless suffragists who waged a 75-year battle, everyone in this country now owes a debt to the election integrity activists. If we even have a functioning democracy in the future, it will be in part thanks to them. But, they can't do it by themselves, and right now they are pushing a very heavy rock up a mountainside.

No amount is too small.

25. Do you see the distinction here between politicans, who...
will use your money for their own campaigns, and organizations working on bringing INTEGRITY to U.S. elections, protecting democracy for generations to come? Some of these groups do amazing work on budgets in the *hundreds* of dollars per month. Donating to them is a great way to make your hard-earned money go a long way toward creating needed change.

22. More $ to candidate, more time to voting issues
So this third question isn't really that appropriate. I am reasonably happy with what I have been able to contribute in each category.
