Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, 54, was assassinated on Thursday as she left an election rally in the city of Rawalpindi. Reuters reports: "News of her death brought a swift and angry reaction from supporters in Sindh and its capital, Karachi, where fires were set, shots fired and stones thrown. 'Police in Sindh have been put on red alert,' said a senior police official. 'We have increased deployment and are patrolling in all the towns and cities, as there is trouble almost everywhere. President Pervez Musharraf condemned ' in strongest possible terms the terrorist attack that resulted in the tragic death of Bhutto and many other innocent Pakistanis', the state news agency said."

A grim-faced US President George W Bush Thursday condemned the assassination of Pakistan's opposition leader Benazir Bhutto as a "cowardly act" and said she had sacrificed her life for democracy. According to the AP: "Speaking from his home in Texas, Bush called for justice against the "murderous extremists who are trying to undermine Pakistan's democracy. In his broadcast remarks, Bush said that Bhutto knew her return to Pakistan earlier this year 'put her life at risk, yet she refused to allow assassins to dictate the course of her country.'"

Well, at least Musharraf took off his uniform.

For me, I'm glad the holiday is over. It's not my favorite time of year. I have lost too many loved ones at Xmas time and since I don't have kids, it's just never been that much of a big deal. For many years anyway. I'd much rather do Thanksgiving and cook dinner for all my stray people!!! :-)

And the events of today takes any joy out of the season. Sigh.

We've watched that movie yearly since before the kids were old enough to watch! 'It's a damned commercial, son of a *^#%@', poor Ralphie!

one of my favorite parts is Ralphie's mom on the phone with the other mom and they're discussing that word and you can hear the other mom's response, "from his father?", in response to where Ralphie heard the Queen Mother of swear words, right before she goes after her son!

And as I recall this movie made zero bucks on its theatrical release back in 1980-whatever.

Sadly, the director - Bob Clark - and his son were killed in a traffic accident this year.

He had an odd career. His big money-earner was "Porky's".

But he did make an oddball film I really enjoyed - "Murder by Decree" with Christopher Plummer as Sherlock Holmes and James (sigh!) Mason as Watson.

I was thinking about you during our watching of The Christmas Story! We watched on Christmas Eve, and now that the boys are older and we don't have to do that mad dash to get to the tree before they do...they actually piled up into our bed Christmas morning and we were all laughing about our favorite parts of that movie before we made it into the living room to open presents! :hi: and a big :hug:

The little kids are all transfixed by the window display with the toy train, etc., and one little kid is smearing his snotty nose on the glass. I thought I'd die.:rofl:
